Lena tucked her chin down and inhaled through the soft fuzz of the scarf. It smelled deliciously clean, almost like the sheets in Gypsy Man’s townhouse.

What was it about the guy? Two quick encounters and she couldn’t get him out of her head. He wasn’t anything special. With his sharp dark features, he didn’t have movie star looks nor did he have the build of one of those heroes on the covers of the romance novels on the drug store racks. In fact, she didn’t think he was much taller than her own five foot five.

Nice lips though. Kissable lips. Full on the bottom with a slight upturn at the corners of his mouth.

She gave herself a hard shake. Imagining kissable lips on a rich bastard who probably thought her a disgusting crook meant she was an idiot or having a brain freeze. A gust a wind buffeted her. Right now, she’d vote for the brain freeze. Damn, it was cold enough to freeze a heck of lot more than her brain. She wiggled her fingers in the thin gloves and hurried up the street.

But she couldn’t help thinking about her Gypsy Guy. He built bridges. Probably had a rich papa and a gilt inheritance. Tomorrow, she’d go to the library with the boys and while they read in the children’s section, she’d use the computer there to look Mircea Vargas up.

I asked Zara to tell us more about the characters in this story.

Under the Skin is the last book in my Skin Quartet series. The hero of the story Mircea Vargas was first introduced in Book 1 Beneath the Skin as a thirteen-year-old graffiti kid, living poor on the streets of Brooklyn with his older sister Toro. He plays a major role in the next two books. In Book 2, Close to the Skin, he helps his friend Bella Bell escape capture. In Book 3, Within the Skin, he is kidnapped and loses his leg from an infection.
By the time we meet him again in Book 4 Under the Skin, Mic has adjusted to using a prosthesis, and has found a career as an architect designing a bridge across the Hudson River in New York City. What he hasn’t adjusted to is the fact he will never be a famous street artist, he will never be comfortable being rich, and to being dependent on his sister and his friends. He wants to be independent and make his own way. He also is searching for love.
Lena Correr, the heroine of Under the Skin, seems very different from Mic on the surface. A cat burglar, she steals to support her mother and two brothers, putting her own life at risk. Falling in love would only complicate her life.
Lena runs into Mic on the Williamsburg Bridge, and he saves her from being apprehended by the cops. She repays him by robbing him. But instead of turning her in, Mic sets out to discover why this beautiful young woman must steal and to try to help her get out of poverty. Neither expect to fall in love.
As the story progresses, the star-crossed characters discover that despite their growing love, everything and everyone are working at keeping them apart. Under the Skin is a twisted version of Romeo and Juliet set on the streets of Brooklyn.
