#Interview with Carey PW author of Acing the game #MacKade #ContemporaryRomance #LGBTQ

Acing the Game by Carey PW released in February in the Adult, Contemporary, LGBTQ+, Romance genre.

Is food really the way into a person’s heart?

Shep Lee thought he had it all. A successful restaurant, a loving husband who understood his asexuality, and most of all, the ability to be himself, a popular chef in the small town of Cloverleaf, Montana. That is, until his husband, Elmer Eshler, began pushing Shep more on sex.

Elmer doesn’t understand why he can’t turn his partner on—aren’t they perfect for each other? And Shep loves him, right? Shep, meanwhile, while confident with his body, is and forever will be sex indifferent. Why has Elmer suddenly changed his tune? But he doesn’t want to lose the man he loves so much. What can they do?

Shep convinces Elmer to try a polyamorous relationship. Elmer gets to have Shep and the sex life he’s always wanted. Shep gets a cooking buddy and a chance to experience a relationship and even try sex with a woman as his authentic gender. At first, Shep isn’t sure, but finds himself coming around—this feels safer than opening up the relationship. All three of them will be romantically involved, so that should ease any jealousy, right?

But when Willow Saint, a free-spirited, boisterous, and saucy young woman, comes into their lives, neither are prepared for the emotional and sexual rollercoaster that follows. Enthralled by Willow’s charm and kindness, Elmer and Shep struggle to understand what this means for their own bond. Can they become one happy family? Or will this ruin everything?

How has your writing evolved?

Acing the Game is my second published novel. I’m currently drafting the second book of a new serial, The Dark Pride. It’s significantly different than my first two works.

My first novel, Grayality, shares a lot of similarities to Acing the Game. Both are based on elements from my real life, though they are highly fictionalized. My husband struggled a great deal with my asexuality, even more than my gender transition. Reading my book to him as a I drafted it, he concurred that I captured many of his internal struggles through Elmer’s character. It was important for me to accurately portray the inner conflict that someone who’s allosexual may experience after falling in love with an asexual person. However, I can’t say we’re exciting enough to add a third person into our marriage. But it was great vicariously taking on that adventure.

Series and serials are popular in the publishing industry, and taking on new challenges flows in my veins. My serial is a dark fantasy, so I dove into the realm of world building, something new for me. Likewise, character and plot development changed when I knew I needed to carry the story over into two more books. Honestly, I worried about not having enough story to write. But as I immersed myself in it, it all just came to me naturally. It’s been nice to spend more time with my characters, delving deeper to their nuances and complexities. However, since this book is not based on lived experiences, it feels less intimate for me than my first two novels. For that reason, I’ll definitely return to more works like Grayality and Acing the Game. I poured my raw, vulnerable soul into these compositions, so if anything, I will certainly cherish them for the rest of my life.

My writing will continue evolving. I have plans for a dark comedy in the works, a genre that is completely new for me. I enjoy seeking new challenges and prefer not to get stuck in one genre or style. Regardless, romance will probably remain a strong plot line for me, but I’m sucker for a love!
