Interesting re-take on Cinderella.
Stolen Princess (Royal Conquest Saga #1) by Nikki Jefford released on Monday in the Fairy Tales, Fantasy, New Adult,Retelling genre.
The ball was only the beginning. It wasn’t enough to kill my mate, heir to the throne. My obsessive Fae brother-in-law wants the crown. And he wants me ruling by his side.
I thought I was done with romance until a certain pompous elf reappeared in my life at the illustrious Monster Ball. A little teasing led to bruised lips and captured hearts. No one wants Jhaeros and me to be together, not even my favorite sister, Melarue. But she’s a teenager just coming into her elemental powers and discovering boys—the wrong kind—the type I want to shoot arrows through.
My royal in-laws are playing a treacherous game, and my brother-in-law is determined to get what he wants. But this elf princess no longer has a master. I don’t want a crown. I want freedom, family, and the love of a lifetime. But love might be the one thing that destroys us all.
**This book will now include the prequel novella Enemies and Lovers.

How Cinderella inspired this book, and Nikki’s favorite fairy tales.
Cinderella was a big inspiration with Aerith being the oldest of three sisters. Her family’s misfortunes fell on her shoulders. I love twists on fairy tales. In this one, she doesn’t want to win the Fae prince but unwittingly does … with her bow and arrow rather than a glass slipper.
The second fairy tale that inspired this fantasy was The Ugly Duckling. In the beginning, everyone sees Aerith as this haggard, bedraggled young woman. Then she’s swept away to Faerie where rest, plentiful food, gowns, and jewels transform her into this beautiful swan.
Stolen Princess is a blend of those two fairy tales with Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice (Jhaeros being her Mr. Darcy) and the world of Holly Black’s The Cruel Prince. In Stolen Princess, the Faerie kingdom of Dahlquist is a place of royal intrigue, obsession, and danger. I’m such a big fan of Holly Black’s Folk of the Air series that I was inspired to do more with Fae.
Sarah J. Maas is another huge inspiration. I started reading the Throne of Glass series when it first released. But my absolute favorite of hers is A Court of Thorns and Roses. Feyre struggles to help her family make ends meet really resonated.
I’m the oldest of all my siblings and have always been drawn to characters who assume roles of responsibility.
I loved fairy tales growing up. (Still do!) Picking favorites is hard. I always loved Cinderella and all its variations, including Ever After starring Drew Barrymore. Beauty and the Beast is another longtime favorite.
I started participating in the annual Once Upon anthologies several years ago which has rekindled my love of fairy tales. It’s been fun to pick out which tale I’m going to twist with the theme of the year. So far I’ve participated in Once Upon a Kiss (with a Frog Prince retelling); Once Upon a Quest (with a Three Little Pigs retelling); and Once Upon a Star (with a Pinocchio retelling). I’m planning to do an Emperor’s New Clothes retelling for this February’s anthology. (The theme is a secret for now.)
Thank you for having me. May you have a happily ever after!
