Who is Melanie as a person, not just as a hunter?

            Thanks to Viviana for giving me this opportunity to talk about Melanie Perkiss, the main character of my novel HEIST.

Mel is a great witch hunter and paranormal investigator, but for now let’s forget about her magical exploits and instead focus on her regular life. As far as that goes, Melanie is a simple enough girl who does simple enough things. She resides in a small quiet street, renting a house rather than owning one because she doesn’t afford it yet.

Family-wise she looks after her stepsister, Sara—who has rebelled against her own mother at sixteen and run away from home. Sara attends a neighborhood school, the Western Senior Academy, and she is having some problems there which Mel must attend to. It’s a bit of a big responsibility to have for someone who has never had any experience raising children of her own, but Mel tries her best. 

On the romance front, she has a boyfriend named Kay. She loves him very much, though the two of them haven’t slept together yet. Kay is a doctoral student at NYSU and has no association whatsoever with magic, aside from the fact that he is dating a witch hunter. He helps to keep her grounded. They go to the movies or ballparks together. As far as being intimate goes, Kay is putting her under a bit of pressure for them to have sex for the first time, but that’s something a normal boyfriend is expected to do and Mel loves him regardless. 

Because her companion creature is a fish named Mr. Gillz—whom she adores a lot—Melanie’s favorite hobby is swimming. While deep in the water, that’s when she can say she has united with the spirit of her companion fish. On a more practical level, though, swimming is something a witch huntress needs to relieve stress and wash away her fears of the bad magic she encounters daily. With no pool of her own at home, she goes to a lot of community centers to indulge the passion, and recently she has recruited Sara in that watery pursuit.

In future years, Mel plans to become a wife and a mother, and she waits to see how she will handle that, given her demanding hunter profession. Professionally, she is set to become first a scrutineer in the Witch Court, and then eventually a presiding judge.

To sum up, she is a very interesting character to follow, and I am sure readers will agree with that once they have checked out the first book in her series.
