Insight into a Mysterious Hero

Steal My Heart is written in a first person, limited viewpoint. I chose that because ever since I was a teenager, ever since I reached that age where I became who I would be for the rest of my life—which for me was a writer with a tremendous imagination—I’ve had a very strong first person voice. I’d written several romances in the third person, with alternating viewpoint between hero and heroine, but they weren’t attracting the attention of editors as much as I wanted. That’s why I wrote this novel in the first person. And it worked. I found a publisher with this story. Steal My Heart is my debut novel.
The problem for an author though, with first person voice, is that you only get one point of view, in this case the heroine’s, and there is much about the hero that I want to convey to the reader. So in the spirit of fun and insider information, just for all the readers of this blog, I’m going to share a bit about the hero that I only hint at in the story.
Let me say first that I won’t give you his name today. You’ll need to read the book for that. No spoilers here.
Our mysterious burglar has a tragic history. He’s suffered tremendous loss, and he’s chosen a dark path in order to deal with the emotions churning inside him. He’s angry. Still, he possesses an inherent sense of justice. He never steals for personal gain. He only steals to right a wrong.
Our heroine, Lexanne, intuitively nicknames him Catman. Like the anti-hero of a similar name, he’s a dark figure potentially verging on villain because of how he chooses to right the wrongs he sees. I think it is important to note that at the beginning of the story when our heroine, in acting out her sex-with-a-cat-burglar fantasy, throws herself at him, he does not know she thinks he’s someone else. All he knows is that this beautiful, sexy woman desires him. He didn’t break into the mansion for this. He has a purpose. He needs to stay on purpose, but he is completely taken by her and can’t resist letting her distract him momentarily from his goal.
But even so, he’s careful. He’s in disguise. He can’t give away his identity. He can’t speak and let her hear the sound of his voice. They can’t simply pause and have a matter-of-fact discussion about sexual consent. So he makes sure that sex with him is what she wants. At every step, he gives her an out. With every move, he’s gives her an opportunity to stop. She’s free to halt the action at any time. She’s in charge, and she makes it clear what she wants sexually.
And he’s captivated.
When he returns to the mansion days later, he’s still driven by his purpose, but again he can’t resist this woman and visits her in bed. He doesn’t know she’s a cop, so he’s loving the kinky handcuff games she’s playing. By the time he learns she’s out to catch him, even though they are on different sides of the law, he still can’t resist her.
He craves her touch just as much as she craves his.
