INCEPTIO (10th Anniversary hardback) Roman Nova Series released 10 years ago in the Thriller genre.

“It’s about Roman blood, survival and money. Mostly yours.”

In an alternative New York, Karen Brown is running for her life. She makes a snap decision to flee to Roma Nova – her dead mother’s homeland, the last remnant of the Roman Empire in the 21st century. But can Karen tough it out in such an alien culture? And with a crazy killer determined to terminate her for a very personal reason?

Stifled by the protective cocoon of her Roma Novan family, deceived by her new lover, she propels herself into a dangerous mission. But then the killer sets a trap – she must sacrifice herself for another – and she sees no escape.

A thriller laced with romance and coming of age, this first in series is Roman fiction brought into the 21st century through the lens of alternative history and driven by a female protagonist with heart and courage.

Author Bio:

Alison Morton writes award-winning thrillers featuring tough but compassionate heroines. Her ten-book Roma Nova series is set in an imaginary European country where a remnant of the ancient Roman Empire has survived into the 21stcentury and is ruled by women who face conspiracy, revolution and heartache but with a sharp line in dialogue. INCEPTIO starts the adventure…

She blends her fascination for Ancient Rome with six years’ military service and a life of reading historical, crime and thriller fiction. On the way, she collected a BA in modern languages and an MA in history.

Six full-length Roma Nova novels, including INCEPTIO, have won the BRAG Medallion, the prestigious award for indie fiction. SUCCESSIO, AURELIA and INSURRECTIO were selected as Historical Novel Society’s Indie Editor’s Choices.  AURELIA was a finalist in the 2016 HNS Indie Award. The Bookseller selected SUCCESSIO as Editor’s Choice in its inaugural indie review. The Historical Novel Society recently selected JULIA PRIMA, the first Foundation story set in the 4th century, the accolade of Editors’ Choice.

Alison lives in Poitou in France, the home of Mélisende, the heroine of her two contemporary thrillers, Double Identityand Double Pursuit. Oh, and she’s writing the next Roma Nova story.

Roma Nova – romantic?

I hate romantic fiction – I wouldn’t let my wife read it!” This was how one over-excited male member(!) of a writing group greeted my first pages of INCEPTIO where heroine Carina meets hero Conrad.

A virtual gladius point pierced my neck, but I toughed up like a true Roman and politely pointed out that almost every novel had an emotional relationship in it – what a poor story any of them would be without one.

Rubbish!” he shouted back, then started to grab books off his shelf of popular thrillers. His face fell as he read the blurbs. Even the grittiest Karin Slaughter or the toughest of Lee Child’s Reacher series betrayed him. He was left chagrined and furious. I smiled in the most condescending way I could muster and was comforted by the faces of the rest of the group members ‘shocked and stunned’ by his attack.

So… I write thrillers featuring tough Praetorian special forces heroines in the 21st century. There are fights, chases, conspiracies and harsh decisions all mixed up with Roman values and a strong sense of survival. But all four books featuring my heroine Carina (INCEPTIO, CARINA, PERFIDITAS, SUCCESSIO) are bound together by the epic love story of Carina and Conrad. Over fifteen years, along with the tough stuff we go through attraction, lust, love, betrayal, joy, reconciliation, misunderstanding, broken hearts, envy, jealousy, enduring love, anguish, reconciliation – heart-stopping emotion all the way.

Perhaps we like to think of ourselves as sentient, logical beings, but who’s kidding whom?

Emotion rules us, whether we like it or not. We engage with causes, we cry out ‘unfair’ instinctively when something doesn’t seem just, and we disclose our feelings all over social media. Our prime reaction when meeting new people is emotional; that’s the famous ‘gut feeling’. Then we take a deep breath and allow our logical, sensible brain to take over. But our initial emotional reaction to that new person is usually 99% accurate.

We treasure friendship, family love, emotional love and enduring love very highly – these feelings and values makes us true human beings rather than merely a walking mass of cells processing information. Sometimes we do need to calm our emotions and override them with our logical minds. I always try to ensure a balance between the two extremes when creating and writing in my characters. Some veer towards the over-reactional while others are more analytical and practical, but they always have a proportion of both emotion and logic.

As in the real world, human relationships are at the heart of my characters’ actions; they drive the plot. Carina and Conrad’s sparky rock-strewn path in INCEPTIO, their falling out in CARINA, her dilemma in PERFIDITAS and Conrad’s in SUCCESSIO wouldn’t be anywhere near as gripping for readers if there was no fundamental emotional connection. Celebrating 10 years since INCEPTIO was published is also a celebration of Carina and Conrad’s relationship, both personal and professional. The depth of their feelings for each other tangles everything else up in tight knots.

But if they don’t care about each other, why should we care about them?

  1. Thank you so much, Viviana, for hosting me and the 10th anniversary hardback INCEPTIO. I think it’s as much about the romantic relationship as the exciting adventure and I’m delighted to share it with your readers.
