Magazine Interview with the Sexiest Veterinarian Alive – Dr. Ian Todd from DOC SHOWMANCE by Zoe Forward

I’m not usually up at five a.m., but here I am jetlagged and sucking down hotel coffee from a to-go cup while in a Jeep traveling at top speed over a rocky dirt road in Krueger National Park in South Africa. It’s the only way to catch up with the badboy of TV, Dr. Ian Todd, for an interview. Today, Dr. Todd is accompanying the park’s veterinary medical team to track down a lion that was wounded after a fight with a water buffalo two days ago. 

This first thing you notice about Ian Todd when on camera is he has the jacked up energy of Steve Erwin one minute and the mesmerizing intelligence of Neil deGrasse Tyson the next. Yet, he’s so startlingly handsome with his styled dark hair and vivid blue eyes that he looks like a supermodel pretending to be a veterinarian. He’s the real deal, though, a genuine DVM. It’s the mashup of smarts, wit, and his deep voice that keeps audiences riveted to both his viral online vlog about veterinary care of endangered species. On his reality TV wildlife veterinary show he sometimes ends up in life-threatening situations, like last month when he was in locked into the cage in the back of a truck that was transporting a wounded tiger to the field when its anesthesia wore off. If you missed that nail-biting episode where Dr. Todd almost got his arm chomped.  Yet, what’s captivated audiences and catapulted him into an international superstar is his stint as an emergency veterinarian alongside Dr. Amber Hardin.

You’ve created a niche for yourself as the next TV wildlife expert, only you’re a veterinarian helping wild animals, and you seem to like doing things that’ll get you killed.

Ian: I don’t aim to almost die like the time the viper in South America barely missed my cheek by inches. Loco stuff happens that’s not a camera setup. It makes for great TV. Keeps me quick on my feet and fast with my fingers to inject these guys with extra sedation, if needed. Although, that wouldn’t have worked for the snake. Takes snakes forever to go to sleep with drugs. That moment with the viper was me moving fast and thanking my trainer for all the agility work. When I was on the ER show with Dr. Hardin there was a parrot that almost bit my finger off. We’ve got to realize that’s the reality of veterinary medicine. It’s dangerous and there are thousands of real life vets out there risking their lives, whether it be with dogs and cats or cows and horses, every day to improve the wellbeing of the animal. When I’m out here in the wild with an untamed animal the danger meter ticks up several notches. My goal with being on TV is to show the beauty of these creatures and how even they get hurt sometimes and need our help.

What’s the truth about the heat between you and Dr. Amber Hardin on the ER TV show? Is the notorious badboy who’s dated A-list actresses able to settle down with someone so normal?

Ian: Normal? That’s funny. Amber is a genuine badass emergency vet who always puts her patients first. She’s super smart, beautiful, and…I don’t think I’d call her normal. Maybe a superhero for being one of the few vets willing to say what’s on her mind instead of sucking it up when an owner gets angry or refuses to do the right thing for their pet. What’s sexier than that? As to the two of us? (He winked.) It’s real. All real. We’ll see where we go but things are good right now.

It wasn’t easy to convince her to go on a date, though, was it?

Ian: She made me earn it. 

Whose idea was it to do your first date as a beach picnic?

Ian: It was spontaneous. Wasn’t a TV setup, if that’s what you’re asking. It was after work. We were both exhausted from seeing cases all day. We bought burgers and watched the ocean. There was a bit of a chill breeze, but that made us snuggle closer. Best first date ever. 

What’s next for Ian and Amber? 

Ian: She might make a guest star appearance on my Vet in the Wild show. You’ll just have to wait and see what happens.
