My Inspiration for Metamorphosis

When I started to work on my idea for my novella for Pets in Space 6, I decided that it would be a story set in my Worlds of Fire series. In that series, each story is set on a different world within a universe of portal worlds.

Overseeing the connections between the worlds are the powerful Alchemists, who are devoted to study and experimentation. In addition, there are vampires, and various shifters who each play their parts on their respective worlds.

In my novella, Metamorphosis, the hero Jaydon is a gargoyle shifter from the world of Granjai. I created Jaydon’s pet, Delphy because on his world there’s a special relationship between the shifters (in this case, gargoyles) and birds. The gargoyle shifters have a connection to nature, and they respect the animals in their care.

I liked the idea that a small bird that appears to be very cute and non-threatening would actually be advising Jaydon and keeping him up on news. Asira, the heroine is from the Alchemist world and as she gets to know Jaydon, she also forms a relationship with Delphy.

Pets have their own personalities, as many owners will agree! So, I wanted Delphy to be not only a pet, but also a friend and companion.

Another inspiration for me was the charity that the Pets in Space® anthology is supporting: is a non-profit charity that improves the quality of life for veterans of the U.S. military and first-responders with disabilities. As an author, I love that I can write stories to entertain, and I can also support a charity. It’s an ideal situation where we can do what we love and do good for others.

Before The Fall series
