Cast to the Wind and Waves (1837) EXCERPT

Day 7 August 24

Nate was raking leaves in front of the mansion the next day when Lucy Ellison surprised him.

“Mr. Bradford,” she sang out cheerfully, causing him to halt his work. “Good morning to you, sir. I’m looking for a cat.”

Removing his cap, he dragged a hand through his unruly hair. “Say again. You lost your cat?”

“Not my cat, Mr. Bradford. Actually, no one’s cat is missing. Perhaps I should start over? I require a housecat. For Mistress Grimes.”

“Rats again.” He dropped his head with an exasperated huff.

“Indeed. She swears she cannot rest because of all the commotion.”

“There are no bloody rats in this house,” he erupted. “I searched everywhere. Again, today. Including the cellars. Plus, I’ve set the blasted traps. Enough to catch a bloomin’ army of vermin.”

Lucy’s smile vanished, and Nate instantly regretted his outburst and crude words.

Yet she took a step closer to him and leaned forward. “There are basements? Perhaps I should investigate. Just to be certain.”

Nate squinted at her.

“I sense Mistress Grimes is quite mistaken about the rats. I have my own theory as to where the noises are coming from. However, she will not relent. Something has her petticoats in a bunch, and I’m determined to find out what it is.”

Nate couldn’t help himself. He laughed, hard and long. “A cat, you say?” he finally questioned, blowing out a haggard breath. “Well…you know what? That’s bloody brilliant.” Setting aside his rake, he began walking, and he motioned for her to follow him. “Come along. I know just the fellow.”

A short walk later and they were at the stables. Nate opened one of the large barn doors, allowing Lucy to enter first. The place was cool and quiet, the air filled with the scents of hay and horseflesh.

“Pip,” he hollered down the center corridor, causing the horses to poke their heads out of their stalls and nicker. “There’s a fine lady here to meet you. Hurry up.”

The striped tabby took his sweet time getting there, but he eventually sauntered in to sit in front of them. Pip began cleaning his paws, as if he had not a care in the world.

“Come now, Pip, Miss Ellison has a very important job for you. I know you’re the best mouser at Fairwinds. You just need to convince her.”

The haughty feline glanced up at Lucy with his striking lime-green eyes and gave a loud, “Meow.”

The lady made a sweet sound, like the coo of a dove, and she crouched down to pet the ratty barn cat. Pip nuzzled into her gloved hands without hesitation, purring loudly.

“Good day, Mr. Pip. Aren’t you a fine, handsome fellow? How would you like to be an indoor cat for a time? I can promise you bowls of fresh cream and plenty of table scraps. If you’ll serve as my chief mouse hunter. You may even sleep on my bed if you wish. Unless Belinda claims you for herself.”

Lucy glanced up at Nate wearing a brilliant smile, and his insides gave a twist. Lord have mercy if she isn’t the prettiest woman I’ve seen in ages. Bloody cat gets to sleep in her bed. Lucky bastard.

Our story began with a brainstorming session. Lisa A. Olech, Nancy Fraser, and I, shared ideas about things we love – writing steamy romance, developing strong, stimulating characters, exploring history’s mysteries, and creating memorable settings. We chose bits and pieces of our favorite things and wove them together to create Ghosts of New England: Scullery Bay. Intrigue, murder, and betrayal. Treasures, ghosts, and guises. Love, loyalty, and happily-ever-afters. All parts of this four-book collection.

What if we invent an intriguing location that we would all love to visit? A remote estate on the rustic coast of New England, for example. What if we take up residence in that location during four different centuries? How would Fairwinds—our imaginary, Georgian-style mansion with an iconic widow’s walk—look, and feel, and smell, depending on the timeframe? And what if there were hidden passageways, deadly pirate curses, and even GHOSTS?! Just a glimpse into how this all came to be for us. Let’s face it, it’s thrilling to allow your imagination run wild as an author!

Turns out, it’s not so easy to write an anthology such as this one. In fact, it’s hard work to delve into the lifespan of a great house and the people who dwell there. From regal to ruin, Fairwinds rose and fell like the tides surrounding her. As readers, you’ll get to meet our two “ghosts,” first as living, mortal lovers, coming together despite all odds. Follow them through the ages to modern days, as others join their story. Have the ghosts changed? Do they know what’s happening around them and who is living in their house? No spoilers from me, but let’s just say it’s never boring.

Funny story about that “never boring” part… We created such a vast estate in Fairwinds that we needed maps, notes, genealogy lists, and special meetings to keep it all sorted out as we wrote. Does the hidden staircase look like this? What happens below the Butler’s Pantry and in the cellar? Are there ghosts in the library or just on the rocky cliffs above the beach? And why is there a keyhole but no door?
