I love this series, and I don’t understand how I missed the first two books of it. And as an author who wrote about rock stars, and has books almost finished about rock stars, Kaylene’s post is gold.

Ten things about the rock and roll lifestyle that are misunderstood by the public
by Kaylene Winter
It’s all Glitz & Glamor – For most bands, being on the road is tiring – like a never-ending road trip. It’s hard to live with 4-8 people who are grumpy, sleep-deprived and a bit malnourished. Most of touring involves long stretches of riding in a bus in between destinations.
It’s a non-stop Sex & Drugs & Rock and roll– It’s not the 70’s, 80’s or 90’s anymore. Sure, many bands go through these phases. But to stay at the top of your game, it’s difficult to keep up the party lifestyle every night. Nowadays many bands have personal trainers, nutritionists and even therapists on call.
Its Fun Being Famous – It’s a lot more of a mind-trip than you would think Imagine if you were – well you and then suddenly every single person knew your name. Or getting stared at every time you were eating out or filling your tank up with gas. Hanging out with your friends and having random strangers interrupt your day? It’s all part of being famous – but this can get old quickly.
Signing with a Label = Success. This is probably the biggest fallacy. The only way to ensure there is a chance of success is for a band to make sure a good entertainment lawyer reviews the deal terms. Even then, the label and everyone on the team needs to be behind the band to get the next level.
Your $$ is Made from your Records. It’s been quite a few years since artists huge source of income is made from the sale of records and albums. The real money is made from song writing – so if you are an artist and also a songwriter it’s important to learn all about revenue streams from song writing.Rock Stars are Cheaters. There is a lot of temptation and certainly many rock stars have had their cheatin’ moments. On the other hand, musicians and creatives are some of the most romantic and loyal people around – so when they fall in love, they are really in love. Which makes writing Rock Star Romance so fun!
It’s All About the Music. Of course, the music is the most important thing. The truth is most successful musicians also get to know the business behind their craft. Learning about royalties, marketing, touring, merchandising – and all the revenue streams.
Streaming and Digital Killed Music. This is one thing that really makes me crazy. In my opinion, digital has really given power to musicians in a way they didn’t have before. Sure, you hear all about how low the revenue is from streaming services. I get it. But never has there been a time in history where a musician can connect directly with their fans all over the world (e.g., social media), build their own distribution (e.g., TikTok, YouTube) and build their fan base. With a large fan base a band has leverage to negotiate better deals. In the old days, it could take literally years to build an audience of 10,000 people – now it can happen overnight.
Famous Musicians all Know Each Other. I think some of my favorite stories are of musicians who become famous and get to meet their idols. Remember, musicians are just people like you and me with all the same emotions and fears. Plus, if you’re travelling and on the road most of the year – you generally are hanging out with the people you are touring with. All of that being said, it is a small community – eventually if you have enough success, you’ll probably become buddies with your fellow musicians.
The Biggest Bands are the Most Talented. I can’t stress enough how much a band’s success is dependent on all the stars aligning. The band must keep it together, write great music and get along (or fake it). They need a good manager and good team behind them to make sure all the relationships that are developed continue to fuel success. Some of the most talented musicians are the most tortured, and often don’t have the business mind to achieve financial success. Some manufactured non-talented bands have Grammys and lots of hits. It is the rare unicorn band that is both Talented & Famous!
