i asked the Authors, when I see two authors writing together, I can’t help but wonder how they do it? How do you make it work? Does each of you have a “role”, ea one writes dialogue and the other action and so on?

Every co-author relationship is a little bit different and not everyone works out as well as its participants want it to. In this, we were lucky that we were able to come to an initial agreement as to what we wanted to write and grow from there. Starting with the idea of selkies, we compiled a Google document as a way of compiling all the stories and lore we could find about selkies. Almost using it as a chatroom, we went back and forth about characters, basic plot, and what parts of the lore we wanted to weave into the story and how. From there we created a general outline we both had access to and could follow as we began the writing process.

We wrote the majority of AotO in August 2016.  We even had our own text colors (blue for Jamie; red for M) which ends up being cool because, if you go back now and look at the original document, you can see who wrote what and where each of us added onto the other’s writing. From there, we just wrote. We would pick up where the other left off, watching the story of Tris and Imri come to life right in front of us.  M and I would message each other throughout the day, playing off each other’s last bit written. So neither of us had a specific role.  Communication is an important key and personally, google docs really helped with the collaboration process because we could really just hand it back and forth.  Plus it’s real time, so you can see the other person working in the document which was also a lot of fun.

There is a point in the story where we change the POV in the book, which really allowed both of us to write simultaneously. When we hit that fork, M took one path, especially since she prefers writing in third-person, while I took the other path, continuing with the first-person narrative. Being able to proceed in that fashion was somewhat of a compromise for both of our preferred writing styles.

All in all, it was a very positive experience for both of us.  Both of us had previous experiences where we had attempted co-writing with other authors and had it not work out so we kept an open mind about this project.  This was the first successful collaboration for me, however, M has collaborated with other authors and continues to.

Jamie Webster is an Adult Fantasy writer who recalls writing stories as early as ten. She first began writing fanfiction, though she typically created an original character to follow. In high school, she began to create her own fantasy worlds and roleplayed on Yahoo Groups and AIM. In her adult years, she has completed four books as well as written for several publications including a blog, Trials and Tribulations, for her local newspaper as well as articles on writing and book reviews for Fantasy-Faction.

Jamie received her B.A. in English with a focus in Creative Writing from UMaine and an MFA in Creative Writing from Full Sail University. She does most of her drafting during NaNoWriMo and fancies herself as the hybrid plantser. Her passion is reading, writing, crocheting and playing video games.
