On Tour with Unrest (Blood Moon Saga Book 1) by Victor Arteaga and Meet the Characters

Well, if it isn’t a story I’ve never heard of. First, vampires and humans… friends? Different. And werewolves (I guess) exiled on a lunar planet? Seriously different. And the book’s voice is simply right.

Unrest (Blood Moon Saga Book 1) by Victor Arteaga released in April in the Paranormal, Sci-Fi genre.

Remembrance Day is just an excuse for vampires and humans to throw themselves a parade. They like to pretend they did us werewolves a favor. But I guess it’s not all bad. I do get cheap booze, live in an underground lunar city, which some would find cool, and I am employed. Sejanus Industries isn’t a benevolent corporate ruler, but they’re the devil I made a deal with. My life is quiet and mostly non-violent but one message from my cousin could cause me to lose everything I’ve sacrificed for my peaceful life.

I pulled up to SpecialTea and pounded on the door. Giancarlo answered and I tried to walk past him, but he stuck an arm out to block me.

“Huevon, you want me to break it again?”

He scowled and puffed up his chest. “I’m not drunk this time, bitch. If you—”

I punched him in the throat. The follow-up kick to his chest threw him backward, smashing a table to pieces when he fell on it. Two goons raced out of the back room with guns drawn. I hopped over Giancarlo and intercepted them at the counter.

My vision swam with gold and my muscles pulsed

with energy. Time slowed down. The first goon on the left swung with his pistol. I ducked under his arm and drove a fist under his ribcage into his liver. He gasped and doubled over. His gun clattered onto the floor. Goon Two aimed his weapon at me, but I kicked it out of his hand. He charged, drove his shoulder into my stomach, and picked me up. I wrapped my legs around his torso and snaked my forearm under his chin into a headlock right before he slammed my back into the wall. The taste of copper flooded my mouth.

An Interview with Nate and Aless

“Name?” Nate asked.

La Reina Del Sur.” Aless smiled and bit her bottom lip to keep from giggling.

Nate stifled a chuckle. “Maybe if you were Rosa. Come on, Al, let’s get this done.”

“Fine, Alessandra.”

“Place of birth?”

Aless rolled her eyes, leaned back in her chair, pulled her leg up and held her knee with intertwined fingers. “Ugh, boring. Did you come up with these questions?”

“No, Nokomis did.”

“Of course, she did. A ver, dame.” Aless motioned with a hand for Nate to give her the document. He obliged by sliding a hand on the glass table. The digital file reappeared in front of her. She raised an eyebrow as she read the questions. “’Favorite food? If you could eat dinner with anyone living or dead who would you choose?’ Really, Noko?”

Nate folded his arms and the thick bands of muscles rippled under his dark skin as he leaned his elbows on the table. “Pretty standard questions.”

Aless cast him a disapproving eye. “The woman represented half the people in our district for their pardons without breaking a sweat. She doesn’t do ‘standard’. She’s messing with me.”

Nate shrugged and smiled. “Maybe.” He nodded to the questions. “Are you going to answer them?”

“Pft. No.” Aless waved away the document. “If we have to do this, I’d rather you ask me something real.”

Nate’s laughter rumbled in his chest as he thought of a question. Aless pulled a lock of her thick, black, curly hair out of her face.

“How’d you meet Yuki?” Nate asked. Aless grit her teeth.

Mierda. Not pulling any punches, are you?” Aless kept her gaze on her hands. A lump grew in her throat. “She was hiking with a coworker. Me and Grisela were new Daybreaker recruits and we had intel a vampire was hunting people at the trailhead, so they sent us to investigate.” Aless paused to steady her breath. “Turned out it wasn’t just one, it was two. They waited for the last of the hikers to leave and that was Yuki and her co-worker. They attacked while Yuki was in the bathroom.” Aless grinned. “Dumb bastard didn’t know what he was in for. She fended him of with her hiking stick until I made it there. We took care of him, Grisela took care of the other, and then Yuki pushed me out of her way to save her friend from bleeding out.” Aless swiped away a tear. “Anyway, if I could have a dinner with anyone, it’d be her.” She sniffed, fiddled with her fingers, and mumbled, “I need a drink.”

Nate unfolded his arms and reached across the table to place a comforting hand on Aless’ arm. She patted his hand then pulled away.

“What about you? What’s your story? Why the military?” Aless asked.

“Not much of a story really. Parents did the best they could.” Nate’s back stiffened. “New Detroit wasn’t an easy place, but then as I hear it, the original city was harder. That’s what my dad used to say, anyway.” He shrugged and continued, “Military was an easy way out. Routine calms me, and what better place for a rigid routine than the Marines? Didn’t much care for guns but,” he spread his arms, “not much I could do about that. Mom raised me with the idea that if you commit, do your best, work hard,” he pressed a fist into his palm to emphasize each word. “You’d get far in life. I don’t know about elsewhere, but it worked for me in the Marines.” He chewed the inside of his lip as he thought. “I left after a bad mission with some vampires, but you know that story. Met Anya not long after.” He folded his arms and caught Aless’ gaze. He smiled. “Speaking of capable women; the day I met her she laid out a guy twice her size and got mad about it being so easy.”

“She was a badass,” Aless said and nodded.

Nate hummed in agreement. “We got married not long after that. She trained me throughout my MMA career. Until she got sick.” Nate clenched his jaw. “If I had to choose someone to have dinner with, I’d pick her too.”

The pair sat in silence for a few moments.

“Why are we doing this again?” Aless asked.

Nate blew a slow breath through his nose. “I don’t know. Hungry?”

“Thirsty. But I could eat.”
