April Fool’s Day Prank – The Meanest Ever (by Amber Daulton )

I love playing pranks, but only on people I know and fully love and trust, which narrows it down to my poor hubby Greg. I’ve tried pranking other people, usually with negative results since my humor is weird and not many people understand it.

Anyway, the meanest prank I ever pulled on Greg was back in college, when we were dating and living together. We were throwing a party and it just happened to be April 1^st. I didn’t plan the joke or anything; it just happened.

Greg doesn’t drink much, but when he does and goes overboard, he’s a loud and hilarious drunk. Since he was irritating me, I told him I was pregnant with another man’s child.

I know, that’s very mean to do, but seriously. He was driving me freakin’ crazy.

Anyway, I told him the man’s name was Chip, we met at school, and I was in love with him. At first Greg didn’t believe me, but then our friends jumped in. Everyone was saying how wonderful Chip was and that they’ve known about the affair for a while.

Now, Greg was getting mad. He starts cursing, calling me names, and begins to cry. Realizing I’ve taken the joke too far, I apologize and tell him none of it was true. He doesn’t believe me. It’s like one o’clock in the morning and he leaves the house, if you call stumbling down the road through our neighborhood leaving. He was screaming and making so much noise that my friends and I were worried the neighbors would call the cops. We chase after him and drag him back to the house. I finally calm him down, promising him I love him and that I never cheated. Once he realized the truth, he couldn’t stop laughing and kissing me.

When I think back on this, I feel a little guilty for playing such a mean prank, but it’s also a fun memory. Greg laughs when he thinks about it, too, so no harm done.

“Did you ever love me? At least tell me the truth on that.”

Surprise overshadowed the anger that burned in his eyes. “Yes, I did. I’m sorry I made you doubt that.”

Her tight control slipped and a tear slid down her face. Melody dug her nails into her palms to regain control. “You owe me the truth.”

Max tunneled his fingers through his spiky, dark blond hair. “I do, but I don’t want you to hate me more than you already do.”

“I don’t hate you. I did a long time ago but I forgave you.” She stepped back to give both of them breathing room. As it was, all she could breathe in was his scent. She felt suffocated and strangely at peace by it. “I’m happy, Max. My life is good. I missed you for a while but I moved on. To answer your earlier question, no, I don’t have a boyfriend. I’ve dated men after you, of course, but I’m single now. That’s my choice.” She refused to tell him about her list of must-haves, her criterion for potential love interests. Melody didn’t want him to know how much his betrayal had affected her view on men and love. “Besides, I’m sure you moved on to other women. I doubt a handsome man like you would have trouble finding a new bedmate.”

He glanced away and shifted his feet which confirmed her suspicion. She wrapped her arms around her queasy stomach and walked toward a window. She peered through the slats of the blinds but she didn’t see much of anything. “Do you have any idea what it’s like to feel not good enough? Tell me why you left Willow Creek without me. I don’t care what the answer is. I just want to know. I won’t hate you for it.”
