Valentine’s Day: Love or Hate?
by Amber Daulton
Hmm? Tough question.
I enjoy the idea behind Valentine’s Day. Love is a wonderful thing, whether you’re expressing it to a spouse, child, parent, friend, pet, or another living creature. Humans have a need for companionship. We’re social beings, no matter how much we like being alone. Love, friendship, and camaraderie are all ways to show one another what we think and how we care.
What I disapprove of is the holiday itself. In many modern civilized societies, you’re supposed to buy candy, flowers, greeting cards, balloons, stuffed teddy bears, big dinners, or jewelry to show someone that he or she is loved. Sometimes vacations are taken, and while I would love a romantic getaway to Italy, I don’t need that in order to know my husband loves me. I don’t understand why some people do need it, and why society dictates that if you don’t rush to the store or travel agency that you really don’t love your significant other or someone else who’s important in your life.
This holiday is all about commercialism. Buy this, buy that, spend money, prove your love and worth. It’s sad—which is the understatement of the year—and it distracts from the meaning of the holiday. Love is a feeling and shouldn’t be based on tokens. Sure, chocolate is yummy and fairly an inexpensive gift, depending on the kind you buy. I enjoy it—I won’t deny that—but I don’t need it. After all, once you’ve eaten the chocolate, the flowers have died, and the vacation is over, what do you have left?
Love, or an empty wallet? Or worse, a hole in your heart?
In my contemporary romance novella, My Valentine Adventure, the heroine Claire was married on Valentine’s Day and later divorced around the same time. She doesn’t believe in giving fancy gifts, unlike her wealthy parents who treat each other with elaborate baubles. For her, showing love for her daughter every day of the year and giving her a homemade card and a box of chocolate once a year is enough. Then she meets Parker. While he’s willing to play the commercialized game, he doesn’t believe in the hoopla. You can’t put a price tag on how much he loves his kids or how deeply he’s going to fall in love with Claire. They both speak and act from the heart, whether they’re dealing with family or their personal beliefs.
I would love to know what you think about Valentine’s Day. Please comment on this post. Thank you for reading.

Amber brought along her Valentine’s Novella, which is perfect.
My Valentine Adventure released last March in the Contemporary Valentine’s Day Romance genre.
Parker Townsend is raising his children alone after he lost his wife, but then his ordered world is turned upside down when his two little hellions place a “Mom Wanted” ad in the local paper. To his chagrin, he’s roped into a blind date.
Claire Lauer answers the want ad with few expectations and meets Parker on Valentine’s Day, a day she hates with a passion. As an animal rights activist and a divorcée, she’s more comfortable with a placard in her hand than in the company of a handsome man with emotional baggage.
After a protest takes a turn for the worse, she seeks shelter in her date’s arms. Will Parker and Claire find the courage to lay their fragile hearts on the line, or will they lose their second chance at happiness?

Parker didn’t care about Glenn’s speech, not when he needed to find Claire and make sure she was safe. Police sirens wailed in the distance—someone probably called them before the tiger prowled free, which explained how they arrived so soon—and he finally spotted his wayward date.
Claire climbed up on the cab of Glenn’s truck as though for a better vantage point. She swept her gaze over the protesters and then waved her arms in the air as she met Parker’s gaze.
He forced his way to her. Relief flooded his veins like a drug as he reached her side. Lifting his arms, he grasped her waist and helped her down.
“Stuff like this doesn’t happen often, Parker. It’s just a crazy night.” She braced her hands on his shoulders as she slid down the length of his body. People shoved past them, fleeing both the incoming police and the freed tiger out for blood.
Parker tightened his arms around her, holding her close, not giving her the chance to fly the coop. Claire gripped the lapels of his jacket as a strange gleam lit her eyes like blue fire. She kissed him as though her life depended on it. Stars danced in his eyes from the fevered onslaught of her lips. Her body pressed against his, but he couldn’t savor the moment.
Red and blue lights flashed down the street and headed right toward them.
