Weekly At Vivi’s with Alice Renaud

For Weekly At Vivi’s today Alice Renaud is with us and let me tell you, I love her post!

Alice was born and brought up in Brittany, Western France, her father was French and her mother British (from Wales). She moved to London, UK, in 1997, where she now live with her husband and son. She has been writing since she was 14. Alice got quite a few short stories published in UK magazines, before moving to longer fiction. She wrote three contemporary romance books, but didn’t find a publisher for them. She then realized that mermen, sea witches and water demons were a lot more fun than sheikhs and billionaires! Her first two paranormal romances did not find a publisher either, then she wrote A Merman’s Choice, which was published in January 2019 by Black Velvet Seductions. It is the first book in a fantasy romance trilogy inspired by the landscapes and legends of Brittany and Wales. The second book, Music for a Merman, released in 2019. She loves reading and writing stories, and sharing them with anyone who’s interested! And here’s what she has to say about St. Valentine’s Day.

Valentine’s Day – what is this strange festival?

I grew up in France, where we don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day. When I arrived in the UK at the tender age of 26, it took me a while to get my head around it. For a start, what a strange time of year for romance. Christmas is romantic, all the snow and frost and twinkling lights. Summer is perfect – all those sun-kissed days and golden beaches. But February? In the UK it’s the coldest month of the year. Christmas is long gone, spring is still some way away.

Then there were the heart-shaped cushions, heart-shaped chocolates, heart-shaped everything. The teddy bears. The furry handcuffs and strawberry-scented edible underwear (oh yeah, we know how to do romance in the UK). It all seemed a little… commercialized.

Then I met the gorgeous, kind young man who would become my husband, and in the first flush of love we decided to celebrate Valentine’s Day properly. We dutifully exchanged cards, bought the teddy bear and the heart-shaped chocolates, and booked a meal in a restaurant on the 14th of February.

We got there to find that the restaurant had been completely transformed. There were only tables for two. Every table was occupied by a couple like us, eating the same meal from the same menu, and looking at each other over the same red rose in the same vase, lit by the same heart-shaped candle. I felt I had stumbled into some sort of mass-marriage ceremony. Probably unnerved by the set up, I knocked over the candle and set fire to my napkin. My boyfriend eventually managed to stop laughing for long enough to put out the fire. Romantic? Not so much!

And yet… That evening showed that I had found a man who would cope with emergencies and wouldn’t remind me of my mistakes (not more than a dozen times over twenty years anyway).

We’ve now been married 15 years. We never went out on the 14th of February again. But as my husband’s birthday fall on the 10th of February, we always have a nice meal out, sometimes with a show thrown in, close to Valentine’s Day. We never purchased another teddy (we thought one was enough) but I do buy sparkling wine and chocolates… the wine is pink and the chocolates heart-shaped, but there’s no harm in that.

I also make sure I buy several romance books to celebrate February. Now, it seems like a good idea to have a festival of love to keep us warm through the coldest winter month!

My series Sea of Love is the perfect read to add fantasy and romance to your Valentine season. See below for more! All the books can be read independently.

Then, now, what’s reasonable is taking a look at this book, right?

Music for a Merman (Sea of Love Book 2) by Alice Renaud released in November in the Paranormal genre.

Rob Regor knew that humans were trouble. All the shape shifting mermen of the Morvann Islands knew it. And human women were double trouble… especially when they were lying on the road in front of a digger.

Rob has a mission. Go to the mainland. Work as a policeman. Spy on humans. Report back to his father, the head of the Regor Merman Clan. It should be easy. Until he has to arrest Charlie. Rob can’t fight his attraction to the sexy eco-warrior, and it puts him on one hell of a collision course with his family and his Clan. Will he break the rules – or break her heart, and his?

Love ‘em and leave ‘em, that was Charlie’s motto. It had served her well until now. But Rob is different… Can she open up her heart to Rob – when a secret buried in her past surfaces and changes her completely?

  1. Love that story Alice. Setting fire to the napkin is something I would do. Lol. Yes. Music For A Merman is the perfect fantasy romance read. Anyone who hasn’t read it (or A Merman’s Choice) should put it at the top of the tbr list.
