On Tour with Secrets of the IN-Group by Carolyn Re & Lorreta Re and Meet the Author

Love this one!

Secrets of the IN-Group by Carolyn Re & Lorreta Re released in May in the  Women’s Fiction genre.

A small town. A world wide web. Is the net really a friend? What do you do when the children have flown the nest and you have time on your hands?Six women in the Australian riverside city of Albury realise that, without social media skills, they’re staring irrelevancy in the face. Their book club won’t cut it any more. It’s time to go virtual.

But their decision to plunge into the on-line world brings shocking revelations and unexpected outcomes. Friendships, new and old, are tested and their lives teeter on the edge of collapse. They must navigate a path through the chaos. But who exactly can they trust?

[At Martin’s technology lesson, Sarah is shocked at an image on her husband’s iPhone]

—Sarah tried to smile, but her face felt stiff, as if she’d had Botox injected. Her mind screamed: Who is this girl who looks so like Anna? Why is she on Rob’s home screen? And why is he enveloping her in some sort of … horrible hug? It wasn’t the kind of hug you’d give a girlfriend, more like a father’s proud embrace.

Andrea cleared her throat loudly in a distracting way, quite out of character.

‘Sorry, but I have to go soon,’ she said, gathering her things. She slid her iPad into its leather satchel. ‘Such a nuisance. It’s been fun tonight.’ She looked at Martin. ‘There’s only ten minutes left, would you mind if we finished early? Pick up on this again next week?’

Thank you, Andrea. The ploy had given Sarah momentary breathing space. Her internal scream quietened a little. She had to get out of here, away from the goodbye chatter and the polite offers to take a slice of cake home. She needed to digest what she’d seen and work out what it meant. She had to have time to think.

She dreaded time to think. With the flick of a switch—what a cliché, but how true in this case—her life had changed. It was all so confusing; her fragmented brain whirled with questions. But an answer, barely thought out, misshapen but insistent, was boring into her brain.

Rob has another daughter somewhere. A daughter who’s the image of ours …

What inspired this book?

Carolyn meets with a group of friends regularly—they’ve been doing this for years—to explore novel activities, from pasta making to belly dancing, researching volcanos to kayaking. The idea dawned on both of us how important it is to continue to meet new people and have new experiences at all stages of life. Our book came into being because we wanted to explore the difficulties women might have doing this, especially after they’ve left the work force and their adult children have moved out. How to find love and new friends, and keep up-to-date, when the world they know is changing so quickly?

Also, we noticed we were being left behind in the social media stakes, and so were many of our friends. We’d bought iPads but when neither of us could make sense of the introductory chapter of the iPad for Seniors guide, we thought, surely it can’t just be us? Maybe this topic will resonate with other women in our age group? We hadn’t spent our working lives mastering technology and it was apparent we were entering a new world, one full of Facebook devotees, the ‘Twitterati’ and Instagram influencers. Without the necessary skills, perhaps we’d drift further and further behind. We needed to upskill many areas, most noticeably, around social media. Perversely, it can lead to trouble, though, and in our novel, the women get into a series of unexpected and difficult situations through their naïve use of the medium.

Newspaper articles were another great source of inspiration, in that everything that happens to the women in the IN-group, every twist and turn and surprise is real and could have happened to you or anybody you know. We thought it would be satisfying if the women manage to solve many of the problems social media creates for them through the personal connections they make, and also to show the successes that can come about through the clever use of the technology.

We were delighted to see one on-line reviewer saying ‘there’s a little mystery, a little romance, and a whole lot of camaraderie—all the elements of a great book’, because that’s what we were trying to achieve.

    • Hi Bernie,
Back in 2015, my sister Loretta had a book launch for her novel Stand Up and Cheer. She seemed to be having such a good time, that I asked her if she wanted to write a new novel with me, so we could share the fun. That’s when it all started, and five years later, here we are. (We younger sisters always want what big sis has!)
