On Tour with The Veiled Threat (The Veiled Duchess #1) by Sophia Menesini and Meet the Author

I love everything about this book: the plot, the characters, the cover… it’s just great.

The Veiled Threat (The Veiled Duchess #1) by Sophia Menesini released in June in the Fantasy, LGBTQ+, New Adult, Romance genre.

Captain Shea Lara is the current leader of The Veiled Duchess. The most feared pirate ship in all of Neried. And now, after completing her former mentor’s final score, she’s retiring. Everything seems to be coming to an end… Until a mysterious stranger drags her back into the fold with an offer for a score she can’t refuse. All she has to do is kidnap the crowned princess of the northern Queendom, Princess Joana of Arethusa. The prize is just within reach. But sparks fly as the two women collide. And an obscured threat that could upturn Shea’s entire world storms on the horizon. She’ll face it alone unless she can allow herself the support she needs from old and new allies alike. Something’s coming and Shea is at the center of it.

I asked Sophie if she could tell us about the series as a whole? Will it be made of standalone, or it’s a big story spanning different books? What keeps it together as a whole?

I have nine books planned, three mini-series all taking place in the same universe. The first three The Veiled Threat, The Veiled Descendants, and The Veiled City are all apart of the first series detailing Shea, Jo, and a character you’ll meet in the sequel, Beck, their journey together. Throughout the first series, you’ll get a hint of where the second series will be taking place as well as introducing the fact that the last of the gods live among the mortals in some way. The next three books feature their three children in an epic quest, a royal kidnapping, and war with a neighboring country. In the second trilogy, the audience gets to meet Prince Caen, the eldest son of Shea and Jo, along with his siblings: Princess Rebeka and Prince Calen. The last three books are a prequel series starring Paetre, Shea’s adoptive father, and his first big adventure upon The Veiled Duchess under Phoebus’s captaincy and the Arethusian elven rebellion. Paetre is a considerable part of the first series even though he’s dead before the series has also begun, but I had a whole life conceptualized when I came up with the idea for The Veiled Threat. So I thought, why not do a sequel and a prequel series that shows how Shea came to be and who she became after the first series. So as a whole, it’ll be The Veiled Duchess Series with three trilogies within the same universe all connected to Captain Shea Lara in one way or another.

I’ve played around with maybe doing a couple of short stories on my website, like perhaps a short novella on what happened to Jo the year between the first book, The Veiled Threat, and the second book, The Veiled Descendants. But for now, it’s just the nine books that are thoroughly planned, and chapter mapped out.  The three trilogies completed her story; many of my friends told me well that it seems like a lot to put on yourself for your first series. Maybe you should reign it back. But the problem is that all nine books are needed to tell Shea’s story and who she is, and the trials she encounters and those of her loved ones. Nereid has a story to be recognized as well, a considerable part of the second series is about Prince Caen, and how he’s passed over for the Arethusian throne because he’s a boy, even though he’s the oldest which is quite a switch considering real history. But that’s something he either has to come to terms with or change at the risk of his country believing he’s another Prince Mariner. And Captain Paetre wasn’t always the wise sage Shea remembers. He wasn’t very old when he died. He was her age in the first book, 23, when he found her at age 8 in the slave ports of Lycos, and after twelve years raising her, that’s 35. His rise to his captaincy, his friendship with Caen, there’s a lot there that made him the man who raised such a mighty elven pirate, leader, and woman.
