This is the oddest story, and I absolutely can’t wait to read it.
Awakening: Rise as the Fall Unfolds by Carissa Andrews released Monday in the Science Fiction, Thriller, Urban Fantasy genre.
The final five angels have been located and averting the apocalypse means somehow recreating the birth of Christ. Morgan never expected total annihilation would come down to the actions of five misfit angels. But as each one’s hidden angelic power unfolds, so does the sinister truth… the entire Jesus storyline has been wiped from the collective consciousness, leaving a tear in the fabric of reality.
The final five need to figure out how their gifts are meant to fit together in order to set things right. However, coming to terms with the responsibility resting on their shoulders doesn’t come easy. To make matters worse, the demons have found them and unless they get on the same page quickly, the darkness will consume them all. But how can they make things right when the thing that’s missing happened more than 2000 years ago?
One thing’s for sure. If they fail, existence ceases.

Did you get hard time from readers for the theme of the book? Someone might find recreating the birth of Christ ‘wrong’. What was your experience writing this story?
Such a great question, Viviana! Awakening is actually the conglomeration of two story ideas mashed together. I got the original idea for “recreating the birth of Christ” a long time ago, but I didn’t know how or when I’d use it. While I grew up in a very eclectic and open family, the rural community around us is very conservative.
So, when that idea first came to me, I definitely worried about stepping on toes and not wanting to offend anyone with the concept. However, as I’ve gotten older and learned more about religions, life, and diplomacy, I think I am more capable of delivering on sensitive topics in a way that not only challenges a tightly gripped belief, but can make you question what’s actually possible. The good thing with Awakening is that the story is told in such a way that it doesn’t matter if you’re Christian or not. Both sides can find truth in it and feel like they came out on the other end more enlightened.
For those of you not familiar with me, I actually went to college to become an archaeologist—but ended up instead, focusing on alternative religions and ancient art, history, and literature. So, this world is one that I’ve done a lot of comparison and research on—I just didn’t realize it at the time.
The other half of the story – having angels wake up from their human lives – stemmed from the despair I felt after the 2016 election. To me, it was like we were in the middle of a battle between light and dark and the darkness was winning. It’s not so bad anymore because I feel the tides are turning, but it took a lot of soul searching and discussions with my friends and family to see a silver lining. However, what came out of it was the idea of five angels being called to awaken from their mortal slumber to take on the biggest calling of their existence. The only problem is, they have to come to terms with their angelic side, as well as their mission at hand. And it’s not an easy task for some of them.
This time last year, I was tapped by Prolific Works to be one of the author to try to get a project funded with their crowdfunding classes they were offering. They wanted emerging authors who were already familiar with indie publishing to give it a try to see if it was valuable to more than just new writers. So, I pitched the idea for Awakening there to see if it would fly. Obviously, it ended up being funded. When my backers first got the book, there was a bit of apprehension about how they’d perceive the book. After all, a lot of the backers weren’t necessarily my current readers. But the feedback has been overwhelmingly good—and I couldn’t be more proud of how the story turned out.
