This is a great new take on vampires.
A Violet Fire (Vampires in Avignon Book 1) by Kelsey Quick will release December 9 in the YA Fantasy/Paranormal Romance genre.
In the Vampire Stratocracy of Cain, human blood is scarce. For centuries, councils have sought to assuage the blood shortage by enslaving and breeding humans like cattle, turning them into profitable supply units for the rich and the abled.
Today, eighteen-year-old Wavorly Sterling is officially a supply unit, bound to serve her blood willingly to her master for the rest of her life. One of only few humans that was not bred in Cain, Wavorly knows freedom better than anyone, and she is determined to escape the clutches of her oppressors, even if by the hands of death.
But surprises lay beyond every certainty, and within every doubt. Where Wavorly’s hatred for both vampires and her enslavement once flowed free as blood, it merely trickles as she grows to admire her reserved, yet receptive master and savior, Zein.
Although warmed by comforts never felt before, danger still lurks in the castle, and a prophecy calls from beyond the walls of a lavender gate—concealing the horrific secrets still lodged between handsome smirks and cinereous eyes. It will take everything within Wavorly to face her fears and her doubts; to harness the truth of her past despite what that means for her future. The only question is, will she?
Set in a richly detailed world of fantasy, A Violet Fire is a gripping journey filled with passion, betrayal, lies, and the encouragement we all need to take a stand for our freedom—no matter the cost.

He grabs the hair on the back of my neck and pulls down, exposing the breadth. My mind leaps to my years of night terrors; to that vampire from ten years ago; to my mother changing before my eyes into one of the fallen. I nearly forget to breathe while terror floods my veins.
He’s going to turn me into one of them!
“No! You can’t!” I scream as he lowers his face to the crook of my neck and shoulder, his hot breaths sending chills along my skin—as if each and every inch knows the horror that lies ahead.
“I can,” he says.
My fingers grasp at his immovable arms that have me locked against him. I pull and push with as much might as my hands can muster, to no avail. If I am dirt, he is steel.

Will you tell us a little bit more about the hero and heroine in this story?
Wavorly Sterling is the heroine of A Violet Fire at eighteen years of age. Her occupation? Unwilling blood slave to her vampire master, Lord Anton Zein. She is unique in that she was neither born nor bred into the Vampire Stratocracy of Cain like most humans, but rather harvested from a human colony under siege at only eight years old. Because she was not brainwashed to treat her vampire oppressors as gods, her personality has formed into a strange, bitter, and vengeful thirst for freedom.
While that all sounds strong and heroic in theory, Wavorly has almost no friends, and spends the majority of her time in stressful isolation, where she feels she is safest. The humans that she shared quarters with during her ten years at Nightingale: The School of Infantry Supply, are vicious toward aberrants (unusual humans) and were taught at an early age by their vampire caretakers to ostracize them. Wavorly, despite what she may think, is susceptible to the trauma that this type of social humiliation procures and is constantly repressing the need for companionship—so much so that she finds herself compromising her only friendship with her schoolmate, Savvy.
Because of Wavorly’s intense starvation of affection, she starts finding herself drawn to the one vampire she vowed to hate the most—Lord Anton Zein, the reigning, young general of the western Sabbanthian province, and her savior from the rogue vampires that slaughtered her township ten years ago.
Despite living in an elitist world where humans are often bled dry and cast aside, Zein strangely offers Wavorly a livelihood that she never thought she could have while in chains—favoritism, compassionate handling, and the amassing of small freedoms that leave a lingering high of the true freedom she has always craved. But probably the most troubling for her, is his actions that seem to hint at a forbidden emotional attachment, one that is highly illegal between vampires in the Stratocracy of Cain, let alone between a vampire and a human… love.
Amidst these domestic woes that Wavorly must navigate, there is something greater at play… something that has the potential to unravel everything she thought she knew. Wavorly is very much a strong heroine, but strength isn’t limited to the fearless, nor is it limited to those who don’t waver. She struggles to find her footing in a world that is much more than it seems, while proactively deciding her own fate.
