She dreams of a land of eternal summer, of the ziggurat Etlu has promised but never taken her to. “Our kind do not like heat anymore,” he claimed. Yet she feels the warmth stir around her, pulling her tighter. A grunt of pain startles her awake.
Eanna opens an eye to meet the scruff of an unshaved chin. Tilting her head back, she finds a pair of deep-set amber-colored eyes flecked with green, rather than silver. His gaze sears into her with all the heat and want she has kept buried somewhere beneath her flames. Wil smells like the forest and the tang of wild animal, of cursed.
“Good morning.” He cracks a lopsided grin, and Eanna hasn’t the strength to pull away. He must see the question in her eyes, because he adds, “I woke up in the night, and you were shivering. Lucky for you, I’m too much of a gentleman to let you freeze to death.”
Eanna frowns and tries to shake the fact it shouldn’t be possible for her to freeze. “You shouldn’t have tried to lift me, not with those fresh stitches.” After a pause, she adds, “You kept trying to shift in the night, and I…”
Tried to burn you to death? Shit.
As if he hears her last thought, Wil’s eyebrow rises with his smirk. “You saved my life.”
“You should be dead,” she blurts out.
Wil’s smile fades, and his hand brushes her tangled hair from her forehead. The heat within his touch no longer feels feverish, only cursed. He inhales and releases a breath through his nose, then runs his thumb across her lips. “Seems I owe you a debt. Guess I can forgive you for stabbing me now.” His smile is disarming on his sun-kissed face.
She touches his stubbled cheek before she can think. “You are so warm.”
Now, his smile flickers with uncertainty. “What’s your name?” His voice is gravelly from sleep.
“Perhaps it is better if you don’t know.” Eanna blushes as she realizes she already knows Wil’s name.
He squeezes her hip. At her gasp, his smile softens. “I know more than you think.”
“Oh? You think just because you’ve seen me naked…” She bites her lip.
Wil chuckles, and the feel of his bare chest lights her with warmth, with invisible kisses of joy. She can’t help but return his smile, even as he says, “It was only fair. No telling what you looked at while I was under.” He waggles his eyebrows, and Eanna shifts. His fingers toy with the hem of her loose flannel. “How about if I go first?”
Eanna forces her limbs to relax, despite the faint touch of his fingertips against her lower back. “If you wish.”
The teasing glint returns to his amber eyes. “My name is Wilhelm, and you should know two things before you go accusing me of being one of my lesser bloodthirsty cousins. Some clans, like mine, keep the old ways. We do not eat humans, and we do not call ourselves cursed.”
She is curious enough to ask, “What do you call yourselves, then?”
A burning intensity fills his gaze. “Seekers.”
A smile turns the corners of her mouth. “What is it you seek, Wilhelm?”
“Call me Wil.”
She sucks in a breath before the forbidden name passes her lips. “Wil…”
His kiss steals the air from her lungs. She does not stop him, as he pulls her lower lip between his. Kissing him is wrong, or so her mind says. Her body has other ideas.
Her hands run down his bare chest, eager to feel all of him.
He slips his hands beneath her shirt, touching her back, then dipping lower to squeeze her ass.
Eanna slips her legs between his, eager to feed the hunger building inside her. She needs to be closer, she needs him to make her feel like he did in the bar. Something hard presses against her stomach, and she freezes. She’s never gone beyond kissing with the humans she chose to practice on. Each time, she only thought of one male—the only one.
Wil breaks their kiss with a heavy groan. He closes his eyes, presses his forehead to hers, and slowly pulls her hips in line with his. “Tell me your name—please.”
She had a name, once…before Wil’s people stole it from her. Now, she is all that remains of a house. Eanna blinks back tears as she pushes him away and stands on unsteady feet.
“Wait, take it easy, liobôn. I didn’t mean to frighten you.” He grunts as he pushes into a sitting position and pulls the fur around his torso.
She slaps his hand aside. “Do not touch me again.” The words fall bitter off her tongue. Eanna stumbles her way to the hearth.
“Are you okay?” Wil reaches around her shoulder to brace against the hearth.
Eanna whirls as the flames spark blue sapphires behind her. He is too near, and despite his injuries, he manages to firmly stand. He looks at her with concern.
“Look, I’m sorry if I upset you. You’re just…” He runs a hand through his ruddy hair. “I wasn’t lying before, when I said you’re the most beautiful…fuck. I’m doing this wrong.” He releases the hearth and catches her cheek in his hand. “I haven’t stopped thinking about you since the night we met in the bar. I swear by Crafter, I didn’t know who you were then.” He hesitates.
“Who am I to you?” She needs to know.
Wil brushes a tear aside with his thumb, wonder coming through the weight of the world in his gaze. “You’re the one I’ve been seeking, Anu.”
