My love affair with Messonghi, an idyllic village on the south of the Greek island of Corfu, began when I was a child in the late 1970s. Back then, I used to spend long summers with my grandparents in their home in the neighbouring village of Moraitika. The two villages stand side-by-side on the shore, separated by the river of Messonghi.
I had relatives in both villages and often stayed in Messonghi in my great-aunt’s house, a few days at a time, to swim with my cousins in the mornings, sample my great aunt’s excellent cooking, and dance Syrtaki in the next-door taverna every evening. I think I enjoyed the latter more than anything else! Even now, the nostalgic chords of bouzouki music have the amazing power to transport me to my childhood in Corfu in an instant.
Messonghi is only tiny, and incredibly quaint. Old village houses and modest establishments line the seafront. A bright green peninsula stretches out towards the south from there, two tall mountains standing in its midst side-by-side, dominating the skyline. The peak on the right, the pyramid-shaped mountain of Martaouna, has always fascinated me.
A couple of years ago, during a blissful swim in Messonghi, I was looking out to the majestic mountain, like I always love to do. I was wondering if it had any secrets locked up in its depths from the old days… Pirate gold, perhaps? The remains of people lost and never found? And then, out of the blue, the shape of an almost cartoony, slightly comical, evil witch popped up in my head and introduced herself as Phoni… And, just like that, she began to tell me her story – a story that soon formed itself into my latest novel, The Raven Witch of Corfu.
Lizzie, my heroine, returns to the island of Corfu after twenty years to save her twin brother from Phoni, the evil witch, and helplessly falls in love with a handsome local in the process. The story brims over with suspense throughout, and the ending is mind-blowing – or so my readers tell me.
