Let’s get to the bottom line of things: The story, the world, the idea behind the series, were a solid 5 stars.
The characters a 3 stars.
Which is how I got to the 4 stars.
Let me unravel this.
I absolutely loved the division in realm, one for each season plus a couple of more (honestly, I don’t remember what those were because it was mentioned only a couple of times and it got lost. but I do remember it made perfect sense so whatever those couple of more were, they were cool). Every realm has its own magic, and the people coming from them fit perfectly within the realm characteristics. The war between clans and or outlaws was a nice touch. The best thing about the plot was how King Cadewyn must face the ultimate choice: his reign (like, literally. If he doesn’t do what’s being told by the High Priestess, the reign will basically die), or the woman who turns out to be his fated mate (as in, he has to have her killed).
Now, about the reasons for the 3 stars.
Amber was too good. This-would-never-happen kind of too good. In two weeks, the time it takes to prepare her to the ritual that will kill her, she goes from being rightfully freaked out because she’s in a place that shouldn’t even exist and a “guest”, and being ready to be killed for the Kin’s reign. Now. Okay, you’re good. But this good it doesn’t sound credible, even for the person with the purest heart. So I had trouble with her reasoning, I felt she was hard to believe.
The whole story’s voice was a bit, not childish, but not mature either. At least, a tad too much over the top for someone who’s not 18. It was hard not to roll my eyes sometimes. It was hard to keep my interested, and I did read in a fast-forward mode sometimes.
I did love the descriptions, though. When we see the castle or the realm for the first time through Amber’s eyes, it was like being there.
All that being said, it was a nice story and I am curious about the next realms and the stories that will happen there.
