“Brenda and I were talking yesterday and she told me that she had a drink with an old mutual friend of ours, a man named Augie Alameda.” Skyler stopped and inspected the woman’s face for some kind of recognition.

“And?” Lois asked evenly.

“Well, to be very blunt, we wondered if perhaps you hired him.”

“Hired him to do what?”

“Seriously? Do you not know him?”

“It’s really none of your business, frankly.”

Skyler blushed. “It’s sort of my business. I mean, that’s my business. I’m a public relations professional. It’s what I do. And it’s what I’m doing for Tanner and the Chowder House. We all want to see Wabanaki overcome this slump, don’t we? Especially the mayor?”

“My dear,” Lois began sweetly, “I want nothing more than for this town to flourish. Just like my plants out there. But I did not hire this Mr. Alameda to do anything and I have no idea what he does anyway. How could he possibly help?”

“You said it was none of my business, like there was something there.”

“Because I meant that, not because I actually have something to hide from you. I don’t think I like you coming in here and interrogating me, that’s all. You’re a P.R. professional, not a detective on the Wabanaki police force.

“I see. And I am sorry if I upset you.”

“I’m not upset. But I will bite. Who is Augie Alameda?”

Skyler gave the woman a rundown of Augie’s credentials and history. “And he got Brenda her start.”

“But you don’t like him?” Lois asked.

“I don’t, but that’s because we worked together a few times and we’re both pretty much independent contractors. We’re both solo practitioners, if you will. We butted heads and it wasn’t pretty.”

 “But he can get the job done?”

“Oh yes. He can. And he most certainly will. Which is why the Chowder House and the Lobster Shanty and the Sea Captain’s Inn and all the businesses in town need to be prepared. Combined with the Boston Globe piece that’s coming, we could get quite busy.”

“I’m thrilled, Skyler,” Lois said, standing, indicating that the visit was over, “I really am. But it wasn’t me.”

They exchanged pleasantries and Skyler was shown the door. It didn’t actually slam shut behind her, but it felt that way.

Skyler was more suspicious than ever and wondered if the Mayor was lying to her…or if someone else was behind Augie’s coming to town.

Let’s start from how did you come up with the idea for your book.

As a kid, I used to spend a great deal of my summers in Maine where my aunts and uncles live. We primarily visited Kennebunkport—the southern coastal town made so very famous by the George Bush family compound there—and I modeled my fictional Wabanaki after the tourist town. Wabanaki is much sleepier than its neighbor, but it still has the ‘Down East’ essentials like endless lobster rolls, chilly summer evenings, quint old farm houses, and a cast of odd characters. When I was trying to decide where my main character would be from, southern Maine seemed like the obvious choice because I wanted the setting to be a character all its own and because I know the area so well.

A fun fact about writing your book.

While my former U.S. Vice President character is not exactly an upstanding guy (you’ll see), I do have some experience interacting with the real person who once held the second highest job in the land. My first post-college job was working as an advance person for Dan Quayle in Bush 41’s White House. (And, yes, I know this ages me. And, no, I am not a Republican anymore; strictly independent.) He was a great guy, personable and kind, and I got to know him very well, as I was usually assigned to his children. This was during the Gulf War, so security around the First and Second Families was high. I can’t tell you how exciting it was to work at the White House every day—I mean, I had West Wing clearance and I even met Michael Jackson and his chimpanzee Bubbles while I was there!—and because it was my first job, I was forever spoiled; nothing else has been quite as memorable. So, former politicians make it into my fiction these days.

What are you working on now?

I’m putting a lot of effort into the Skyler Moore Thriller series right now, but I try to get some other stuff in to, because I have tons of ideas in the hopper. Book two, THE NEW MEXICO SCOUNDREL, is also out now. I finished book three, THE NEVADA SABOTEUR, last month and it’s with my editor and comes out on September 27. I also have a different thriller that is a bit more male-focused, SCOUT’S HONOR: LIFELINE, coming out on August 23. It’s been a busy year!

Do you have a day job? / What was your job before you started writing full time?

This is my fulltime job these days. I was extremely lucky to retire at 47 years old after 25 years of working for various political think tanks in Washington, D.C. and then working as an independent meeting planner for both corporate and private clients. I tried my hand at entrepreneurship, too, creating my own baby clothes manufacturing company with my sister and brother-in-law. That was super tough work, but we did manage to get our line in 300+ stores across the U.S. And before I moved from the east coast to Las Vegas, Nevada, where I live now, I co-owned a men’s clothing store near the White House. We had an absolute ball designing the store and shopping for the clothes to sell—our number one client was the actor Kevin Spacey, pre-scandal days—but retail is increasingly hard. Competing with the internet is not fun. So, here I am, writing my stories, and having a ball. 

What does a typical workday look like for you?

When I’m not traveling, I get up with the sun with my two rescue dogs and usually sit at my desk from about 6:00 a.m. until 10-ish. I’m only good for about four hours a day. I write as fast as I can and don’t go back and read it until I’m done. I save the afternoons for errands, emails, and marketing, which is a second fulltime job for us independent authors. I write seven days a week and can usually finish a novel in two months. (My editor lives in New York City and edits ‘big five’ books for a living, but he’s a great friend and he gives me a discount.)

What do your friend and family think about your being a writer?

My friends and family have been extremely supportive. When I first published THE MAINE NEMESIS back in January, I put together what I call my ‘Advance Team.’ I asked about 100 folks who I know like to read fiction, to agree to read early copies of my books. Out of the 100, I probably most rely on 8 or 10 of them, who take the job very seriously. I get extensive notes and corrections (did you know that it’s ‘heartily’ not ‘heardily?’ LOL) and the feedback is essential to me. And I’m getting better at getting people onboard, getting them excited, and getting them to help market for me by telling their friends and family, too. Man, it does take a village when you don’t have a ‘big five’ publicity machine working for you.

The biggest surprise you had after becoming a writer?

Getting published is NOT easy. And it’s all about luck and who you know. Honestly. There’s a lot of crap out there that gets published and a hell of a lot of quality writers who are never given a chance. But that’s life…so you need to take the bull by the horns (don’t you just love clichés?) and do it for yourself.

Do you outline books ahead of time or are you more of a by-the-seat-of-your-pants writer?

I do not outline, but I make extensive notes and I have a general idea of where I’m going, how I am going to get there, and who the bad guy is before I start. The rest…well, it just happens as I go.

The toughest critic that’s ever been given to you as an author?

Anonymous Amazon one-star reviews. If you’re going to trash a book, at least put your name on it. I have a very hard time with bad reviews; they stick with me ALL day. I know I should ignore them, but I can’t help it. And I can’t please everyone. But at least the good out-weigh the bad.

What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

When I’m not writing—or thinking about writing or making notes about story ideas—I love to take advantage of all that Las Vegas has to offer. We have the best entertainment and restaurants here in Sin City and already this year I’ve seen Janet Jackson, Jennifer Lopez, Aerosmith, Fleetwood Mac, and a slew of other shows. We also love to try new restaurants, like Jean-George at Aria; if you like steak, man, it’s amazing. Gordon Ramsey’s Hell’s Kitchen is another winner for the Beef Wellington alone. I also spend a good deal of time in my pool and playing with my dogs in the backyard (when it’s not 111º outside). I’m also a Netflix and Bravo junkie and can’t get enough.

Why did you choose the shirt you have on?

It’s from a place called Cariloha Bamboo. They have a store at the mall that connects the Mandalay Bay casino and the Luxor resort here in Las Vegas, and I absolutely fell in love with their super-soft, light-weight t-shirts. We have their bed sheets, too, and it’s like sleeping on a cloud.

First thought when the alarm goes off in the in the morning?

Well, I only set an alarm if I have to catch a flight…otherwise, the dogs wake me up as soon as it gets light outside. And then, I think, “It’s time to write a chapter or two in Skyler Moore’s world—Let’s go!”
