Maldit woke from his day sleep with a feeling of displacement. He sat on the edge of his luxurious hand-carved bed and contemplated his bare feet.

Annalisa Carr lives in the English Lake District, where she shares a view of the fells with three cats. She spent the early part of her life working as a protein crystallographer, a job she found fascinating. She now spends her time writing, in a variety of genres. Science Fiction, fantasy and fantasy romance are her favourites.

How Do I Write?

In my mind, I am an organised and professional author. I have an office (converted spare bedroom) with a desk and all my writing books neatly lined up on shelves. My desk looks down on the garden, and I share it with my cats, who are my hard-working writing partners.

In practice, I am a chaotic scribbler (although I am getting better, I promise). I mostly write from the sofa, on my laptop, with the radio in the background. The cats share the sofa too.

My writing process is erratic. Some days the ideas tumble out and I write up to 10000 words a day. More commonly, I struggle to make sense of my plot, and my word count is nearer 2000. Some days I stare into space, before giving up and going out for a walk, with the hope that inspiration (or motivation) might strike me.

I usually work on my main project in the mornings (at the moment it’s the sequel to Exile in Darkness), but in the afternoon I’ll probably play around with a couple of other potential stories as well. I might spend some time polishing a final draft, or maybe plotting out a new idea for a story. My side projects, today, involve a futuristic thriller, a space opera, a regency romance and a steampunk novella (I definitely need to focus). I’m also editing the final draft of the sequel to ‘Almost Human’, my dystopian non-romance.

I welcome any extra motivational aids, such as NaNoWriMo. I love deadlines, competitions, and workshops, and I’m always fascinated by how other writers organise their work..
