It feels like a secret magical place. No one else is around and I can’t even hear the usual sounds of campus from here. I jump in, “Can I go first?”

I’m really proud of what I’ve written and knowing how great Olivia is with words, I don’t want to follow her. “Of course,” she answers. I face her, take out my folded paper, and grab one of her hands. I take a moment to look at her. No rush. Everything else has been so fast that I’ve barely gotten to take it in. This, I want to remember and feel.

She squeezes my hand which reassures me that I’m not alone here. We are in this together. I take a deep breath and begin. “Olivia Meadows, I didn’t know it at the time but I’ve loved you since I was sixteen years old. You generously helped me with an English paper about The Age of Innocence and that was it for me.”

She jumps in, “I remember that.” I smile back.

“My turn here,” I remind her with a grin. She holds up her hands in surrender. We hold one hand again and I return to my paper, “As I was saying…what that study session did was create a need in me that could only be filled by you. I saw the book’s world through your eyes and realized that I had been missing so much. It also showed me that, through your eyes, everything is brighter, deeper, and more. I was a little too wild then to want to slow down but I’m not now.”

Natalia is a lifelong reader and lover of romance novels. Before finally tapping away at her keyboard to create her own stories, she tried all sorts of professions: elementary school teacher, barista, seller of make-up, baker, and the list goes on. Hello Natalia, and thank you for being here with us today.

So, how did you come up with the idea for your book?

This girl can dream, yes she can! I love a good romantic fantasy starring myself and I will drift into these daydreams while I’m doing all those tasky things that need doing in my life. One of my daydreams had me as the girlfriend of a handsome young football player and voila, the beginnings of my story started to take shape. 

What are you working on now?

Right now I’m working on bonus content for this book. In fact, I’m hoping it’s completed by the time anyone reads this and is fully available on my website. John and Olivia in That Guy and That Girl have essentially known each other all their lives. I couldn’t resist committing that some of that history to short story form. It’s really interesting to jump back in with them and imagine them from childhood through their late teen years. Oh, the angst of young love…

What started you on the path to writing?

I’m one of those people who always dreamed of being a writer but was too darn scared for many years to admit it out loud. But for me, having that dream never quieted no matter how hard I tried. I think the real origin of my writing is in journaling. For me, nothing in my life has ever felt real until I commit it to the written word. Thus, the incredible number of journals I own that are full—it’s truly a bit crazy but I credit them for giving me a sense of comfort and coming home when it comes to writing.

Which kind of scenes are the hardest for you to write? Action, dialogue, sex?

I would love to say that I’m so empowered and open-minded that writing sex scenes is easy peasy but I can’t. Y’all, I can be quite uptight when it comes to the sex. Or at least writing about the sex. I almost feel like when those scenes came up (of which there were few in That Guy and That Girl) I practically squinted as I typed. My hope is that it’s like anything—this is just a muscle I need to develop and it will get easier. (That was all kinds of weird to compare writing sex scenes to developing a muscle)

What turns you on? 

A big turn on for me is curiosity. I’ve noticed lately that all my real life crushes have that in common. They are seemingly endlessly curious about the world and they seek. So I guess it’s really that combination that I LOVE—curiosity and seeking. I love a big brain!!

What turns you off? 

Ugh, I’m super annoyed by certainty. Or maybe a better way to put it is that I’m annoyed by people who are certain. I think it’s a ridiculous position to hold and I think a lot of the trouble we’re in comes back to folks who are unshakably certain about their “side.” How about a healthy questioning? How about some curiosity? How about room for other thoughts?

Pen or computer?

Pen. I still handwrite my journal pages every day. I consistently outline by hand. There’s something magical for me in putting my hand around my favorite pen and using it to write.

Music or silence?

Oh, that’s a tough choice actually. I won’t take the easy way out and say both. I’ll make a choice here and I think I have to say music. I love an impromptu dance party. I love quiet music that fades to the background but motivates me creatively. I love the feelings that an old song can evoke. Yep, it’s music for sure.

Alone or in public?

Alone, alone, alone. If I had to endlessly be in the company of others, it would be very, very bad for all concerned. I’m an introvert for sure, for sure. I’m what you call a social introvert. I need to be alone to recharge and then I can joyfully rejoin the world. Sometimes that’s a challenging bargain with children in the house.

Routine or when inspiration struck

I like a good routine. I’ve noticed that when I move out of impulse, I often wish I would have given the moment a bit more thought. I’m not against moving in inspiration but I do prefer routine. I like order even if my home doesn’t always reflect that.

Outline or just write?

I must outline. It’s a holdover from my screenwriting work which is super structure-based and I can’t shake that need. I’ve broken my own heart too many times in the past when I’ve written without an outline and gotten to that inevitable place where I was stuck. I had no idea where to go next and I got really bummed. My trail of unfinished work resides there in the land of “just writing.”
