Excerpt:

Cold seeped into his bones. Something warm blew across his face and ears. Jack swatted at his ears and peeled one gritty eye open.

“Papaya!” He pushed at the horse’s nose. “Go away.” Papaya continued prodding at him. “Darn horse.” He rubbed his cold hands together.

In the dim light, he wasn’t sure if it was morning or evening. The previous day’s events came back to him. He sat up and wiped a hand over his stubbly chin. Tears burned behind his eyes.

Papaya tugged at his sleeve until the only thing he could do was stand. “Darn it, horse, leave me alone.” He pushed the horse to the side. The sun rising behind the mountains from the east cast a shadow on a tree Jack swore hadn’t been there the night before.

Standing at least twenty feet high, the trunk was twisted and gnarled like the arthritic hands of his grandfather. Several roots rose from the ground making it look as if it would walk away. Some of its massive branches drooped close to the ground, like arms dragging across the grass.

As the sky lightened, he realized that, unlike the rough bark of the pines at this altitude, the tree’s light brown bark was smooth. Was it the lighting, or did some of the bark actually seem golden while in other places it was rough and dark brown? The surrounding trees paled in comparison.

Jack stepped closer. Pale green, oval leaves reminded him of an elm tree, only much smaller. When the wind blew, the undersides shimmered with a silvery glow.

Chatting with the Author Tina Susedik

Tina is an award-winning and multi-published author in both fiction and non-fiction including military, history, children’s, and romance. Her favorite is romantic mysteries. She also writes as Anita Kidesu. 

As a host on Your Book Garden, on Authors on the Air Global Radio Network, LLC, she interviews authors in all genres twice a month on Tuesdays 

In her spare time, Tina loves to read, hike, camp, bike, garden, take photographs, and spend time with her five grandchildren.

I had the pleasure to have Tina here, and here’s our chat.

What are your favorite TV shows? 

I don’t watch a lot of television, but when I do, I enjoy watching mystery, who-dun-it, and history.

What is your favorite meal?

All four of my grandparents came from Germany after WWI. Both my grandmothers made roast beef and gravy, spaetzle, and red cabbage. My mother learned to make the meal. To this day, if I’m in a German restaurant, it’s what I order.

If you were to write a series of novels, what would it be about?

I have an idea for writing books about women in the west who had unusual jobs – miner, lawman, lawyer, doctor, blacksmith, etc. It may be set in Alaska.

Is there a writer you idolize? If so, who?

I have a couple of authors I love and have on my keeper shelf. One is Kathleen Woodiwiss, who is the first romance author I ever read. I enjoyed her because of the way she wrote strong female characters and how she interwove history in her story. I also like LaVyrle Spencer. She had a way of making her characters real and her stories covered topics most authors of her time didn’t touch.

How did you come up with the title of this book?

I usually have a hard time coming up with titles, but this one was easy. Since Jack and Sarah were on the Oregon Trail and they fall in love, “The Trail to Love” was easy.
