This book is amazing. I haven’t had so much fun and/or healthy edginess while reading a book since I don’t remember when. You guys, go get this book.
The book is Spells, Salt, & Steel (Season One) by Gail Z. Martin & Larry N. Martin, a Comedic Horror.
“When all else fails, the ass end of a carp makes a damn fine weapon.”
Your new favorite monster hunter has arrived! Bubba the Monster Hunter has some competition in this horror comedy collection from best-selling author duo Gail Z. & Larry N. Martin!
By day, Mark Wojcik can be found elbow-deep in engine grease, making cars and trucks safe for the highway. By night, he can be found traipsing through the wilds of Pennsylvania, making the world safe for humans. He’s more than just a mechanic, he’s a New Templar Knight. He travels the backroads and byways fighting weresquonks, ningen, selkies, ghosts, and…gnomes? Is that gnome…naked? (sigh).
Season One collects the first four novellas in the Spells, Salt, & Steel series –
Spells, Salt, & Steel
Oh, how I LOVED this book.
It’s a series of short stories/novellas that follow Mark Wojcik, mechanic by day, demons (and all that’s odd and dangerous) hunter by night. This book is funny, and adventurous, and various, and has a couple of moment where I got misty eyed.
It has the same feeling of a TV series, that you can read all at once or savor little by little, story by story. Some character often comes back, and those who do are so well defined you have no trouble remembering who they are. Those who are new are well introduced, and fit perfectly in the story.
If I could, I’d give it so many more stars than just 5….
One last word about the horror categorization. I’m highly impressionable, and kind of a scaredy-cat. Well, I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and honestly don’t agree much with the box it had been put in. This is a brilliant series of adventures that will keep you on the edge of the seat, but will not give you nightmares (I hate those books…). More than that, you want to stay with Mark because it’s pure adrenaline.
Loved it, loved it, loved it.
Chatting with the Authors
Gail Z. Martin discovered her passion for science fiction, fantasy and ghost stories in elementary school. The first story she wrote at age five was about a vampire. Her favorite TV show as a preschooler was Dark Shadows. At age 14, she decided to become a writer. She enjoys attending science fiction/fantasy conventions, Renaissance fairs and living history sites.
Larry N. Martin is the author of the new sci-fi adventure novel Salvage Rat. He is the co-author (with Gail Z. Martin) of the Spells, Salt, and Steel/New Templars series; the Steampunk series Iron & Blood; and a collection of short stories and novellas: The Storm & Fury Adventures set in the Iron & Blood universe. He is also the co-author of the upcoming Wasteland Marshals series and the Joe Mack Cauldron/Secret Council series.
The Martins have three children, a Maltese, and a Golden Retriever.
They came by and told me something about Mark and the Series.
Writing the Monsters that You Know
By Gail Z. Martin and Larry N. Martin
In our Spells, Salt and Steel series, Mark Wojcik is a mechanic-turned-monster hunter. He didn’t set out to be a hero, and he didn’t grow up in ‘the life’ like the Winchester brothers on Supernatural. A wendigo killed four members of his family, and Mark killed the wendigo. Becoming a hunter gives him a way to work through his grief and his issues, while making the world a safer place.
The series is set in Northwestern Pennsylvania, which is where Larry and I are from. We drew heavily on the ghost stories, history, and legends that we had heard growing up, as well as weaving in locations that were our stomping grounds. That’s been a lot of fun, and it’s certainly made trips back to visit more interesting as we incorporate book research and location scouting into the itinerary!
We tried to make the location almost a character in itself, so that the stories couldn’t happen anywhere else! That includes not only the geography and landmarks, but also the foods, weather, regional language and other elements that are are true to the area. We’ve also given Mark a good crew of friends who help him with his hunts, research the occult, and have his back when he needs it. The stories are spooky/funny, with Mark’s snarky humor that gets him through tough times.
The Spells, Salt and Steel series is part of the Bubba the Monster Hunter universe originated by John Hartness, and loosely ties together with all of the other regional series set in that world.
