“Please, whatever you are,” Henry begged, “don’t hurt us. Please.”

There was no answer, but Charlotte heard the rustle of fabric and a felt a light breeze on her skin as the shadow whisked by her. She whirled around to face the cell across from Henry’s. Through the haze of her torchlight circle, Charlotte watched as the shadow knelt down, freeing a hand holding a key from the depths of a long, black cloak. With the telltale rasp of iron on iron, the door to the other cell creaked open.

The stranger crept soundlessly inside, returning seconds later with a body slung over its shoulders. The body emitted a low groan, and the shadow lowered its burden to lean against the wall. With unexpected care, the shadow crouched over the emaciated prisoner and murmured softly to him.

Seeing this spark of humanity gave Charlotte the courage she needed. “Help us.” It was a statement, not a question.

The cloaked figure remained kneeling next to its charge, and a man’s voice finally spoke in a low rumble. “But you have nothing to offer me.”

Charlotte hesitated at his unexpected statement, trying to decipher its meaning. “Free my brother, and you can have anything you want.”

And welcome!  What is the main thing you want readers to take away from your book?

Fawkes and Charlotte lean on each other at different times throughout the story. In a relationship, one person doesn’t always have to be the stoic one. Pick a partner who gives you strength when you need it, but who also isn’t afraid to be vulnerable around you when they need support. There should be an equal give and take.

Can you tell us a fun fact about writing your book.

The king’s name in the story is an anagram of my husband’s nickname. Also, I know next to nothing about horses, so all horse-related material had to be proofed by one of my beta readers, who is an accomplished equestrian. Thanks, Annie B! I learned a lot.

What do your friends and family think about your being a writer?

I’ve received nothing but support from family and friends since I started writing. My husband believed in me from the first and told me that if I just kept going, I would get published one day. That’s why my book is dedicated to him!

What is the biggest surprise you had after becoming a writer

How it feels to hold your book in your hands for the first time. I thought I would be prepared, but it was a very emotional event. The book was a physical representation of the thousands of hours I’d spent locked away in my own head trying to achieve a distant dream. It was so surreal to see it come to life. I teared up a little, then took a shot of tequila.

What does your writing space look like?

I like to write outside in the cockpit of our sailboat. Inspiration strikes when I’m surrounded by lapping waves and a beautiful sunset. All I need is my computer and a snack and I’m good. It’s also the only space where I can get some peace and quiet, which is one of the pitfalls of living on a sailboat with a baby! I wouldn’t have it any other way, though, even if I do sweat my butt off out there in the summer.

What has been one of your most rewarding experiences as an author?

I love to help aspiring authors. I am not an expert in this business by any stretch, but I’ve learned enough about craft and storytelling over the past five years to help newbie writers. Beta reading is a particular passion of mine, as well as editing query letters. Advice and encouragement are the two most important things I can give!

Which kind of scenes are the hardest for you to write? Action, dialogue, sex?

I love writing action and dialogue, but I hate describing settings. I feel like it slows me down when I want to get to the next exciting interaction between characters. Oftentimes, I’ll just write things like describe city here as a reminder to add it in later when I edit. One scene actually had “Blah blah farmers blah blah checkpoint blah blah castle gate.” Truly poetic, I know.

How long does it take to write a story?

From beginning to end, I can usually finish a novel in nine months. Book babies are very similar to actual babies, as a matter of fact. My pre-write process: 1 month. Draft: 3-4 months. Edit: 2 months. Beta readers and feedback: 2 months. Polish and submit for publication consideration: 1 month.

If you were an animal, which one would you be?

I am absolutely a chipmunk. Not only is the resemblance in my cheeks uncanny, but I scurry around planning and prepping for everything (winter included).

A pet peeve.

When people don’t put their shopping carts back and leave them in the middle of the parking lot.

Do you have any scars? What are they from?

I have a big scar underneath my chin from gymnastics practice when I was a kid. I knocked myself out doing a double front tuck and landing short. Knee met face, blood everywhere. On the plus side, I can hardly remember it. Everything is sort of fuzzy from that day…
