Sad, and sweet, and all things that will make you curl up on the couch with misty eyes and a small smile. To me, this is the promise this story held. It’s not dark, or shocking, or full of vengeance and rage. It feels more subtle, quieter, and because of this, extremely powerful. Also, I got a chance to speak with Kristina, the author, about the book.
You’re correct, Kristine tells me. Damaged isn’t something that is “light and fluffy.” This is one of the reasons I make sure that there is a warning at the very beginning of each book. I want to make sure people are going into them with open eyes. A lot of the emotions Bella goes through, I’ve dealt with. And it’s that pain, that loneliness, that emptiness that made me want to write the Dark Road series to begin with. While it has taken me time, looking back on the journey that Bella and I have taken together, I realize it’s been cathartic. I’ve managed to dig into my own feelings and the darkness I faced growing up and explore that a bit by writing just these first few novels, but most especially Damaged.
There is a lot of build-up that occurred in Addicted. Though there is some resolution and some continued build-up in Damaged, it deals more with the psychological and emotional struggle a person faces not only with rape, but drug addiction and depression. When I first wrote Damaged, it didn’t have the emotion it has today. I remember reading through it and telling myself it wasn’t real enough. It was that moment that I put everything aside and just sat down and connected with Bella. With her journey in this book so close to my own, I knew the only way I could make this feel authentic was to get in the gutter and drudge up my own history. Doing this reminded me of where I’ve been and how far I’ve come. And that is something I hope people get out of this.
For anyone who has been through similar emotions, they know that sometimes it’s a never-ending battle. And sometimes that constant battle takes a toll on those who care the most. Depression, rape, addiction, none of these things are easy to deal with, whether you are the person facing it or a loved one of the person facing it. That was something I had to consider when I wrote this book too. Thinking about my own fight and how it impacted my family, I knew I couldn’t pull any punches. So I don’t.
Now, I am known to end my books with a bit of a cliffhanger and Damaged is no different. However, I do believe I end it on a positive note given everything that happens in this book. As for Bella’s journey as a whole ending with hope, that it does. Her journey is just too long to cover in one book, let alone two. Like those who have been there, Damaged is another path in the road, but it’s one that sometimes must be taken.

Now, here’s the book we were talking about.
Damaged by Krys Fenner (Dark Road Series, #2) is a Contemporary, Young Adult.
Hope springs eternal for everyone except Bella Kynaston. She survived the rape, but the aftermath is a whole other story. She struggles to figure out who she really is as more truths are revealed about her heritage. With no real anchor, sometimes ending it all seems like the only way out.
David has loved Bella for three years. Too bad he feels as if he no longer deserves a chance with her. Much to his surprise that’s exactly what he gets, but she’s far more damaged than he ever imagined. Still, he’ll do anything to help her even if it means losing himself in the process. Any transgression can be forgiven. Or so he thinks.
Will Bella find the peace she so desperately seeks if the pain permanently ended? Is there someone who can get to her in time? Or will the damage she’s suffered prove too much to bear?
