Today I’m on tour with a book that got my attention–all those lies, and danger! Also, Kenzie stopped by and we talked about something I find particularly difficult: social media.

I’ll start with the book, and then talk with Kenzie.

And now, here she is, Kenzie Macallan. Hi Kenzie, and thank you for being here. Because mine is difficult at best, what is your relationship with social media, all the likes/dislikes, preferences, usage, etc.?

Social media is like navigating a labyrinth on a digital highway. It’s fast, wild, unexpected, and necessary. I don’t believe there is a writer out there, except Mr. King, who can survive without being on social media. It’s necessary to communicate with readers, stay in touch with groups, and letting the readers get to know you. That being said, there are great things about it and not such great things about it.

There are things I love about it. I’ve made connections with people all over the world from England to Australia. Where else but on social media could you make those connections? You do have to do your homework to find out if they are the real deal. There are a lot of scammers and pretenders out there. But if you use common sense, you won’t get yourself in trouble. If you follow the right people it can also be a very uplifting and positive experience. I’ve found new authors, editors, formatters, social media experts, cover design artists, and promotion companies all through social media. These are people are more than willing to answer any questions you have about writing and publishing. You can figure out who’s really good at what they do.

There are things about social media I don’t like. Some platforms seem to be a place for people to complain about anything and everything. They complain about their jobs, book sales, other people, etc. People write whole diatribes about everything that is horrible in their lives. I had to stop and ask myself if some of it was even real. It becomes very negative after a while. I choose not to participate or comment on those posts. I question whether social media is the place to be sharing everything or asking for money. That is a red flag. Other platforms seem to be used only for promoting merchandise or books. For me there is a saturation point. I can only take it in small doses. Viewer beware.

When I first got on the social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Pinterest, I vowed to stay positive. I have a lot to be grateful for and I want to support others who are trying to make a splash in publishing their book. I avoid liking or sharing negative posts or political points of view. There are groups for every kind thing you can think of from politics to origami. Those are the places for like-minded people to come together and share ideas. I stay to my writing groups and comment on those topics that interest me.

I use social media to connect with readers, authors, editors, and others in the business from cover models to cover design artists. I share my books, new releases, giveaways, and promotions. Abiding by the 20/80 rule seems to be key. Twenty percent of your content should be promotion of your books; eighty percent should be who you are as a person. Readers want to connect with you are many different levels not just your books. They want to take a look inside who you are and what makes you tick.

Right now, I’m an Instagram girl. I love the visual impact you can create and yet get across your personality with humor, drama, or smarts. It tends to be less personal than Facebook but can create the same ideas. Facebook tends to be a very personal place and some people love to be in other people’s business. I haven’t cracked that code yet maybe out of fear. Twitter is another place I like to hang out. It gives you a chance to see other authors’ works, meet inspirational people like Marsha Wright, and retweet adding your own spin. That being said, I don’t know how much all of this affects the sales of your book. To be determined.

In the end, you have to find what works for you and where to find your audience. This takes time. Each platform serves a different purpose. You have to figure out the formula that works for you. As an author who has a full time job not writing, I can’t put the time in I need to analyze all the data. Overall, I like the social media outlets and find it to be creative and fun while getting yourself in front of readers. I enjoy connecting with other people from all walks of life.

Dean needed a distraction from the scene that just unfolded before him. Cooking would give him an escape. His hands trembled. He had been here before, only last time he completely fucked it up. The fierce connection to the beautiful, strong creature in the next room would be his undoing. His past caught up with him. Did he honestly think he could bury himself in work and one-night stands to keep him from facing his past mistakes? Every time he thought about not being able to save her, the winch tightened in his chest, cutting off his air.

Hunched over the cooking eggs, his memories flooded him. No other options presented themselves other than to keep Leigha safe. The emotions pulled at him from several directions, demanding his attention. Over the years he had tried to hammer them down, hoping they would leave of their own accord. He had even tried to drink them away without success.

“Hey, you okay?” She blew into the room like a warm Australian ocean breeze. They already had connections that only true lovers have with each other. That link that allowed you to feel and sense things about the other person.

He turned around and pasted on his model smile. “Yeah, just remembering something.”

She walked over next to him as her eyes read his lie. “The model smile doesn’t work on me and the eggs are going to burn.”

Kenzie lives with her husband in New England. She has been fortunate enough to travel all over the world to places like Africa, Greece, Switzerland, Holland, France, England and, of course, Scotland.
