today I have Kat Flannery with me for a nice chat about her and her Branded Trilogy, a Historical / Western / Paranormal Romance.
Sizzling ROMANCE, the WILD WEST, and a dash of PARANORMAL make the BRANDED TRILOGY bundle a heart-pounding and satisfying read. Let’s meet the Author, Kat Flannery.
Hi Kat, and thank you for being here today. How did you come up with the idea for your books?
I wanted to write something other than the normal witches, sorcerers etc. They’d all been done before. When I thought about the powers my characters had I knew it had to be something a bit mystical; where I could create my own world. This is when I chose to base my story around the gypsies.
What sort of research did you do to write this book?
Oh a lot. I had never written anything in the colonial times and had no clue what gypsies even did back then. I needed to know basically everything about the time and place, Jamestown, during the 1700’s.
What is the main thing you want readers to take away from your book?
There is a message in each one of the novels within the Branded Trilogy. Lakota Honor, everyone deserves a chance. Blood Curse, hope and believing in yourself. Sacred Legacy, forgiveness and love.
Did you always have the reins of the story or the people in it tried to take over?
I’d love to say yes, but the real answer is no. My characters seem to push me around sometimes and I give in to their wants or desires. However, I have on occasion put them in some pretty awful situations.
What are you working on now?
Two different books; I am writing Ivy a historical western novella that is in The Montgomery Sisters series. And a contemporary romance.
Do you have a day job?
I work two days out of the week in an office and the others I am home writing. I chose to take a part time job for stimulation. I was not getting out of the house and meeting people and I felt that it was affecting my social skills and my inspiration to write. It all worked out great too. Best of both worlds.
What does a typical workday look like for you?
When I am home writing I generally check my emails, do some marketing, and then dig into writing. On occasion, if I’ve been away from writing for a few days I take some time to recap all I’ve written to refresh my mind so I can continue on.
How do you keep from resenting your duties when you have to stop writing to take care of them?
Family comes first. They always will. I get frustrated especially when I’m on a deadline, but I never resent them. You just need to find a way to work around things. For example if my youngest has basketball and I’ve been at the office all day…I write in the evening when everything is done. You just have to make the time.
What does your writing space look like?
I write all over my house. Sometimes it’s at the kitchen table, couch, deck, on my desk bike. It depends what I need at the moment.
Do you outline books ahead of time or are you more of a by-the-seat-of-your-pants writer?
I do both. Sometimes the book is already in my head from beginning to end and I can just write. Other times I need to flush things out and that can take a while.
Do you have quirky writing habits?
I do. Music, foot heater, candles and on occasion whiskey.
How long does it take to write a story?
It varies on how much of the story I know. I’ve written novels in two and half months and others in five months.
What do you like to do when you’re not writing?
I love spending time with family and friends. Camping, bonfires, reading, cuddling with my dog.
Best song ever written?
I love music and therefore I could never choose just one.
Worst song ever written?
Again…there are too many to say.
Favorite actor and actress.
Ryan Reynolds and Emily Blunt
Who would you want to be for 1 day and why? ( It can be anyone living or dead).
An archeologist on a big dig in Europe. I love history and this is my dream job.
What turns you on?
What turns you off?

Alone or in public …Alone.
Routine or when inspiration struck…Inspiration.
Outline or just write….Both

Sometimes…life was much more simpler then.
What errand/chore do you despise the most?
Up early or sleep in?
Both depends on the week.
Is marriage outdated?
What famous person would you like to have dinner with?

Now, back to business. Here’s what the Trilogy is made of.
Fate has brought them together, but will a promise tear them apart?
In the small town of Willow Creek, Colorado, Nora Rushton spends most of her days locked up in her home with a father who resents her and fighting off unwanted marriage proposals from the wealthy Elwood Calhoun. Marked as a witch, Nora must hide her healing powers from those who wish to destroy all the witkowin—crazy women. What she doesn’t know is that a bounty hunter is hot on her trail.
Lakota native Otakatay has an obligation to fulfill. He has been hired to kill the witkowin. In a time when race and difference are a threat and innocence holds no ground, courage, love and honor will bring Nora and Otakatay together as they fight for their freedom. Will the desire to fulfill his promise drive Otakatay to kill Nora? Or will the kindness he sees in her blue eyes push him to be the man he once was?
Four years after the Blood Curse, Pril of the Peddlers vows to protect her child against the evil men who hunt her. With her clan unaware of the branded girl among them, Pril has to keep the identity of her daughter a secret. When her child is kidnapped, she is forced to ask Merchant runner, Kade Walker, for his help.
Kade Walker needs to find the gypsy child. Blackmailed and pushed beyond his own moral code, he is determined to do whatever it takes. When he comes across the Peddler clan, he is sure the girl is there, however all hope is lost when the gypsies capture him. Time is running out—until Pril makes him an offer he cannot refuse.
Amidst greed, lust, revenge and love, Pril will need to trust Kade. But as the evil nears and doubt creeps in, will she discover that the enemy has been standing next to her all along?
Here’s an Extract for you:
“Upon mine death for the blood ye have shed,
every daughter born to ye shall die before it draws breath, to which ye will know pain and worse, I cast unto ye mine blood curse.” ~ Vadoma
The moon hurled shades of green and grey across the starless black sky. Waves rolled up onto the docks rocking the boats tied there. The water pooled around his booted feet as he walked briskly along the wooden boards. The air reeked of fish and sea, and he tucked his chin into the raggedy coat inhaling the stale garment. One hand in the pocket fingered a piece of rope while the other pulled open the door to The Cat House, a brothel on the docks.
Men of all kinds sat at the tables. Smoke, laughter and mugs clinked together. He ignored them all to take a seat at the table in the corner.
“Can you guarantee this to be done?”
“You must kill him and bring the child to me.”
“Consider it done.”
He shook his head. “You must make sure he no longer breathes.”
“Do not be fooled. He is tough and knows his way around a sword.”
“I am not concerned.”
He nodded and slid a brown package tied with twine across the table to the broad-shouldered man on the other side.
Long slender fingers reached out and picked up the package.
Tsura is a Chuvani, and with that comes great power…

Red Wolf is hell-bent on living his life on the sea, until he runs into Tsura on the docks. His pride wounded from her rejection years before, he hoped to never see her again. But when the evil Corsair, Romulus Black, demands to know where she is, Red Wolf must protect her, as is his duty.
But is duty and honor his only reason, or does Red Wolf still carry a flame of love in his heart? And will Tsura finally discover her destiny?
